TODAY’S (AND THIS WEEKEND’S) HAPPY HOURS

Tomorrow is National Onion Rings Day, a day I absolutely support in spirit, but have struggled to support in a more physical way. I would like to be able to support it physically - there are few things I like more than munchin’ on a good ring - but when it comes to onion rings, I go full Goldilocks and, apparently, onion rings are one of those things that are tough to get just right. I have yet to find a ring I want to return to again and again. So, as with any good thing in life, the search continues.

But, anyway, if you want to try your hand at an onion ring that may or may not pass your personal Goldilocks test, here’s where you can tack them onto your Happy Hour fare over the weekend. Just be aware, the Fleming’s onion rings are not on the actual Happy Hour menu, but are around the same price as the items on the Happy Hour menu, so it all comes out in the wash.

RINGS WE’VE TRIED

First up, some places where we’ve had the onion rings, but don’t need to have them again. (Though we do like their other food.)

Note: Over the weekend, you can only try Fleming’s rings on Sunday, and you can only try Lazy Dog’s rings tonight.

Note Two: I do realize those are not onion rings in the Lazy Dog picture. There is method to my madness.

Or, you know, get the rings. You might love them.

RINGS OF CURIOSITY

If you only want your rings off the Happy Hour menu, there is one place we know serves them, but that we haven’t been. They don’t have Happy Hour tonight or tomorrow, but if you can postpone your onion ring celebration until Sunday, you can try them here -

Did You Know? đŸ„›

Platypuses sweat milk.

And they’re not the only quirky-faced animals who do. Their distant relatives, the echidnas, are also milk-sweaters.

Sweating milk. But being real chill about it.

These quirky creatures, with their duck bills, beaver tails, and otter-like bodies, have one of the most unusual lactation methods in the animal kingdom. Instead of having teats like most mammals, female platypuses secrete milk through specialized mammary gland patches on their skin.

When a mother platypus is lactating, her mammary glands become engorged with milk, which then oozes out through pores in the skin. This milk collects in grooves on her abdomen, forming pools that her babies, adorably called puggles (though some platypus experts - yes, there are platypus experts - are none too pleased with the term) lap up. So, basically, instead of nipples, platypuses have milk-seeping fur bellies. Mmm
 delicious.

But, while this unusual method of feeding might seem inefficient, and a little bit gross, let’s be honest, it works well for the platypus (and the echidna). Since platypuses are semi-aquatic and lay eggs, they don't have to worry about keeping teats dry or clean, which can be challenging in their environment. By secreting milk through their skin, they also reduce the risk of bacterial infections that could be caused by water exposure.

So, while sweating milk might sound like something you’d do if you had too much dairy before you ran a marathon, it's just one more thing that keeps the platypus weird.

THIS WEEKEND’S BRUNCH + RESTAURANT SPECIALS 🍣

Want to laze in bed this weekend, but still get those good breakfast stuffs? Here are some places with long weekend brunches that may be of interest.

Or, if you’re feeling some sushi and sake on Sunday, you may want to pop over to Brigg’s Oyster Co.’s Sake & Sushi Sunday, where sushi and sake are on special for $5 a piece.
