Did You Know? š¬ š¦
The first Thanksgiving Day parade sponsored by a department store wasn't sponsored by Macy's.
Macy's might be the reigning champ of the Thanksgiving Day parade game now, but they weren't the first store to start the tradition. That honor goes to a department store called Gimbels.
Back in 1920 Gimbels hosted what is widely recognized as the very first Thanksgiving Day parade in their hometown of Philadelphia. It wasn't quite the spectacle we know today, but it had the basic trimmings: floats, marching bands, and Santa Claus himself closing out the parade.
The goal of the parade was simple - get folks excited for the holiday shopping season and lead them straight to the store. Subtle? Not so much. Effective? Absolutely.
Four years later, Macy's caught the drift and thought they could do a Thanksgiving Day parade far better and bigger. So, in 1924, they kicked off their own parade in New York City. In a show of serious one-upmanship, they brought in live animals from the Central Park Zoo, including camels, elephants, and even lions. (Because nothing says "Happy Holidays" quite like fear for your and your childrenās safety!)
Over the years, Macy's added more and more to their annual parade - giant helium balloons, Broadway performances, and enough marching bands to rival a music festival (probably a pretty bad music festival, but stillā¦) - eventually growing it to the legendary status it has today. Gimbels, with its meager-er means, couldn't keep up. After running their parade for several decades, they simply ran out of cash, and Gimbels closed for good in 1986.
So, while Macy's gets all the Thanksgiving Day glory, let's tip our hats to Gimbels (kind of like the movie Elf did) for kicking off the great tradition. They may not have had a Pikachu balloon or the Great White Way to lean on, but they did pave the way for the holiday extravaganza that still takes up many of our Thanksgiving mornings today.

AROUND THE VALLEY š¤¢
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
A Drink in Neon š¹
Want to brave The Strip this close to the Grand Prix? Godspeed to you!
But, if you do decide to go and battle your way through the construction zone that is F1 prep, youāre definitely going to need a drink.
If youāre looking for somewhere new to get it, thereās a new cocktail bar opening today at The Venetian. The place is called Golden Gai Cocktail Lounge and is āinspired by the iconic neon-lit alleys of the Golden Gai bar district of Shinjuku, Tokyo.ā Because that makes perfect sense at The Venetian. But whatevs. Iāve come to accept that none of the āthemedā Strip resorts are really all that themed.
From their promo pics, it seems you can expect dimly-lit women seductively tonguing straws and playing with fans.
Been a While Since You Puked? š¤¢
Well, your opportunity may be on the horizon. The Southern Nevada Health District has detected an uptick in norovirus in our local waste water. Which is just what everyone wants to hear when theyāre about to be gathering in close proximity with peeps for the holidays.
But, seriously, letās try to exchange gifts and not germs. Wash your hands, and be diligent when out in public spaces. Norovirus IS. THE. WORST. š¤® š© š½
