šŸŒ§ļø Weekend Mode: Rum Punch, Rain, NKOTB Residency, Live Music & More!

Makers & Music is back in Tivoli Village tonight

In partnership with

Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!

First, an announcement:

Starting next week, weā€™ll be changing our publishing schedule. Weā€™re dropping down to two days a week - Tuesdays and Fridays. On Tuesdays, weā€™ll cover Tuesday-Thursday news and events. On Fridays, weā€™ll cover weekend events (and Mondays, if thereā€™s enough to report.) We intend this to be a temporary change, and will be working on expanding our newsletter to other areas of the city. (Donā€™t worry, your newsletter will still only feature events in your own neck of the woodsā€¦ er, Valley.)

Also, itā€™s National Punch Day, which I think honors the drink and not the violent kind. Though, I suppose you could celebrate with either. But, if youā€™re gonna choose violence, make sure itā€™s directed toward someone who really has it coming.

In todayā€™s Summerlin City Wind Down:

  • Today's Happy Hours & Eats šŸ¹šŸˆ

  • Did You Know? šŸŽ

  • Around the Valley šŸ“

  • Events & Live Music šŸŽ†

  • Beyond Summerlin šŸš—

Let's get to it. See you on the other side.

But first up, a quick note from our sponsor.

TODAYā€™S HAPPY HOURS & EATS šŸ¹šŸˆ

Like I already said, itā€™s National Punch Day, and in the case of Happy Hour, that tends to mean rum. So, if rummy sounds yummy (Iā€™m sorry - I canā€™t resist a rhyme), here are a couple of places you can order up a rum punch off the Happy Hour menu.

  • Lucilleā€™s Smokehouse

  • Red Rock Resort

  • Almost World-Famous Rum Punch

  • Fine Company

  • Downtown Summerlin

  • House Punch

Also, last week we talked about a few places with extended Happy Hours for NFL football. Well, this week weā€™re talking Gameday Specials in particular.

One place you can score some discounted Gameday eats on Sunday is Aces and Ales, where the specials include everything from breakfast burritos (9 am-1 pm) to pizza.

  • Aces and Ales

  • Summerlin North

  • Gameday Specials During All NFL Football Games

Looking for something different? Check out our weekend Happy Hour lists.

Did You Know? šŸŽ

Horsepower is a misleading measurement.

Because horses can produce more than one horsepower - much more.

The term ā€œhorsepowerā€ was coined by Scottish engineer James Watt in the late 18th century to sell steam engines. Watt was looking for a way to explain the power of his engines to people who were used to working with horses, so he conjured up the measurement. He calculated that the average horse could turn a mill wheel 144 times an hour, lifting a 550-pound weight a foot in a second. So, 1 horsepower= 550 foot-pounds of work/second. Only, when it comes to real horses, it doesnā€™t. Basically, Watt really undersold horses.

Now, Wattā€™s figures didnā€™t come from nowhere. One horsepower is what the average horse is capable of producing during steady, nonstop work. But in a short burst? Horses go turbo. Theyā€™ve been measured producing everywhere from 15 to 24 horsepower when running and pulling.

What it really comes down to is that when Watt was calculating "horsepower," he didn't account for the fact that horses have multiple "gears." Steady work? Sure, one horsepower (occasionally two, for the strongest of horses). But full sprint, adrenaline pumping, mane flying in the wind? Horses are cranking out up to 24 horsepower.

And thatā€™s nothing to neigh about.

AROUND THE VALLEY šŸ“

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

The Rain Has Come šŸŒ§ļø

Just yesterday, we talked about how dry itā€™s been this monsoon season. Well, todayā€™s looking to be a bit wetter.

If you didnā€™t hear the brief graupel/lightning storm around 6 am, you probably didnā€™t see it either. It was dry before we got out of bed.

But thereā€™s supposed to be more coming over the next few hours, no matter where you are in the city. So, breathe that nice humid air while you can.

The Residencies Keep On Coming šŸŽ¤

Miss your chance to see NKOTB back in their heyday? Or did you get the privilege of nearly getting crushed by a rabid crowd like I did, and want to relive the Beatle-like insanity? If so, youā€™ll be delighted to know that New Kids on the Block will be launching their first residency here next June.

Or, if New Kids arenā€™t your style, Pitbull is also on his way in, with dates starting in November.

Tickets for both shows go on sale next week.
