Did You Know? 🧐

LSD is a derivative of ergot, a fungus found in rye grain that has a very storied history.

While you might think LSD is a product of the psychedelic '60s, and it certainly gained a lot of traction there - see any 60’s cartoon for proof - its roots, in fact, go much deeper. LSD is derived from a fungus called ergot, which grows on rye and other grains. And while that may not sound like much, this little fungus might just be responsible for one of the darkest, eeriest chapters in American history.

Ergot contains compounds that can cause hallucinations and severe physical symptoms, which is why some historical theorists believe ergot poisoning may have contributed to the mass hysteria that fueled the 1692 Salem Witch Trials.

Now, before you think everyone in Salem was tripping out on their morning toast, it's important to note that this is just one theory, and historians continue to debate its validity. But the symptoms of ergotism - convulsions, hallucinations, and even gangrene - do line up with some of the strange behaviors reported during the witch trials. Considering that the people of Salem had no idea about the existence of microscopic fungi or their hallucinogenic properties, it's easy to see how ergot poisoning could have been mistaken for something far more sinister, like witchcraft.

So, while LSD may not have been synthesized until 1938 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann (for the record, he was looking for medicinal uses, not a party drug), its fungal forbearer has been around causing chaos for centuries. Whether or not it was responsible for the hysteria in Salem is uncertain, but, you know, if you’re a fan of rye, watch out for that morning bread.
