There's a reason a lot of countries don't use the term "merry" in regards to the holidays. And it's not because they're grinches. It's because "merry" used to have a bit of a reputation for, let's say, festive overindulgence.

That’s right, back in the day, "merry" didn't just mean happy or cheerful. It implied being slightly (or more than slightly) drunk.

Think of it as the 18th-century version of the word "buzzed."

Even the kids are buzzed!

Now, before you start rewriting your holiday cards, let's be real: for plenty of people, the term "merry" is still a pretty accurate description of what they get up to over the holidays. After all, what's Christmas without a little holiday cheer served in a glass? From eggnog to mulled wine to that suspiciously strong punch your aunt swears is "mostly juice," many of us lean into the “merry” traditions that pair so perfectly with awkward family gatherings and caroling off-key.

But not every culture embraces the idea of associating their holiest holiday with hazy, wine-soaked revelry. That's why in many places, people say "Happy Christmas" instead of "Merry Christmas." It's a tidier, more buttoned-up way to wish someone a joyful holiday without the suggestion that they might be sloshing rum into their coffee by mid-afternoon. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Interestingly, this difference in phrasing also has some historical roots in class distinctions. The more "proper" classes favored "happy" as a way to keep things a little more reserved, while the merrier crowds - well, they were busy proving why the word had its reputation in the first place.

So, whether your holiday is merry, happy, or somewhere in between, one thing's for sure: the word “merry” still captures the joyful chaos of the season - hiccups and all.

If you’re one of those people who likes to slap on a pair of skates and hit the ice come winter, you’re probably stoked to have the Rock Rink on this side of town. But don’t sleep on The Strip. The ice rinks at The Cosmopolitan and Fontainebleau both offer discount skating for locals. The Cosmo’s local discount is a little cheaper than Fontainebleau’s - $20 compared to $30. But The Cosmo’s discount is Mondays-Thursdays only, and Fontainebleau’s is any day of the week.

Fontainebleau also has a skating Happy Hour:

  • Sunday-Thursday

  • 5-7 pm

  • $15
