TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!
It’s Labor Day weekend, and I hope you’ll all be celebrating by doing as little labor as possible. If you’re looking for something festive to do this weekend, there’s a free Labor Day Food & Artisan Festival at The Retreat on Charleston Peak. It’s Sunday and Monday with live music, stuff for the kids, and loads of food and craft vendors. You can check out the details in the Beyond Summer section.
Also, like many of you, we’re going labor-free on Monday… and Tuesday. So, enjoy your long weekend and see you on Wednesday.
And thank you again to our members. We draw for a Hussong’s gift card on the 31st (winner announced on Wednesday)! If you’d like to support your local team, you too can become a member!

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🍝🍷
The good thing about a Happy Hour… or any restaurant meal really… is that they all spare you labor. So, I hope some of you get to get out this weekend and get yourself pampered. Unless you’re cooking out. Because there’s just something about food on the grill that makes it feel less like work, you know?
But if you’re looking for something new in food this weekend, don’t forget the newest restaurant in town, Ciao Vino Ristorante, is opening on Monday (September 2). Yes, I realize in yesterday’s email I said Monday was September 1, which it isn’t. So, apologies. It’s been a long week. Anyway, I checked out the menu, and prices are about what you’d expect from an upscale Italian place, meaning the pizzas are quite reasonable and everything else reaches the level of a “nice dinner out.”
Also, another reader informed us that Public School 702 is, in fact, closed. Temporarily. Until February 2025. Will they really reopen? Time will tell. So, thanks to everyone who chimed in with information. I’m lovin’ the group effort.
And here are your weekend happy hours -
Did You Know? 👔
Wearing a necktie could reduce blood flow to your brain by up to 7.5 percent.
We all know that fashion - especially businesswear - can be a bit uncomfortable at times, but, in some instances, it can actually be a hazard to your health. That snug Windsor knot may look super sharp, but it might be making you less sharp. In fact, studies have shown that wearing a neck tie can both cut off circulation and reduce the oxygen your brain gets by up to 7.5%!
The reason your neck tie semi-strangles you is because it constricts the carotid arteries in your neck, limiting the amount of blood, and therefore oxygen, that reaches your brain. And while a 7.5% drop in blood flow won’t cause an immediate catastrophe, at least in healthy people, it is enough to make anyone feel a bit dizzy, foggy, or even give you a headache.
Add stress, high blood pressure, or other factors into the mix, and the effects can be even more pronounced. Suddenly, that boardroom meeting feels a little more like an endurance test. And it’s not just the acute effects you have to worry about. Research suggests that chronic necktie wearers may be increasing their risk of other health issues, such as glaucoma, due to increased intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eyes).
So, while a snug necktie may stand as a symbol of professionalism and style, it might be worth considering how tightly you’re tying it. Fashion is great, but brain function is better. After all, it’s pretty hard to climb the corporate ladder when you’re passed out on the floor.
AROUND THE VALLEY 📍
Forget the news. Today’s Around the Valley is all about awesome free stuff to do. And there are a couple of free things on the horizon you may want to book now.
Get Pepped or Relaxed at Sammy’s Island 🌴
Fan of USC football? If so, you can join your fellow Trojans tomorrow (Saturday, August 31) for The Spirit of Troy pep rally at Sammy’s Island. Featuring a DJ and the Trojan Marching Band, the rally kicks off at 2 pm. But doors open at 10 pm.
Then, on Monday, it’s a bit more low-key at Swimdustry Mondays, where the first hundred locals can score a free cabana with Las Vegas ID.
Sammy’s Island is part of Palms Resort (4321 W Flamingo Rd).
Go Cage Free 🍿
Nic Cage. Ya boy. Perhaps slightly under-appreciated action star, and, honestly, comedian. But you can celebrate Cage in some of his most iconic Vegas films for three days, starting on Thursday, September 12 at The Beverly Theater. And the best part? It’s free. You just gotta book those tickets (links below).
(I mean, just look at this press photo and try not to be gleeful.)
Here’s the schedule:
Thursday, September 12 - 9:15 pm: Red Rock West
Friday, September 13 - 9:05 pm: The Rock
Saturday, September 14 - 7:30 pm: Honeymoon in Vegas (aka Date Night)
So, get those tickets and get ready to get your Cage on.
