CELEBRATING NEVADA DAY 🎇 

It’s Nevada Day, the day native and new Nevadans celebrate Nevada becoming an official state. While the big celebration is up in Carson City tomorrow (I mean, you could probably get there if you leave now), you can still celebrate Nevada Day, if you’re so inclined, in a way you see fit.

I think I’ll celebrate it by taking a sledgehammer to my neighbor’s new howling Halloween decoration…

Anyway, in honor of Nevada Day, here’s an additional Did You Know…

Did You Know…?

1. Nevada's First "Gold Rush" Wasn't in Goldfield

   The first big mining push actually started near Las Vegas, in the Potosi District, where Mormons hunted for lead in 1855 - a full decade before the famous Comstock Lode.

2. Area 51 Wasn't Official Until 2013

   Though world-famous, Nevada's Area 51 was only acknowledged by the U.S. government in 2013. Its secretive operations still fuel endless speculation about alien activity.

3. Nevada is Home to America's "Loneliest Road" - Highway 50

   Dubbed "The Loneliest Road" by Life magazine in 1986, Nevada's Highway 50 is a 287-mile stretch of pure desert solitude. Today, "road warriors" can get stamps along the way to prove they've conquered it.

4. Nevada Has More Ghost Towns Than "Live" Towns

   With over 600 ghost towns, Nevada's abandoned mining camps outnumber its active towns.

5. Nevada Was Born Out of the Civil War

   Nevada joined the Union on October 31, 1864, in the middle of the Civil War. President Lincoln fast-tracked its statehood to help secure votes and funding for the Union, despite Nevada's tiny population at the time.
