don't miss the Olympics closing ceremony this weekend!
TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!
And Happy Birthday to Smokey Bear, who turns 80 years old today. 🐻 I’m not sure exactly how to honor an anti-fire bear, but pretty sure the number of forest fires currently burning all over the Western U.S. is not the way. Sorry, Smokey. Anyway, for those of you who really want to celebrate this iconic bear and his message, they’re having a birthday celebration tomorrow at Spring Mountains (see the deets in Beyond Summerlin).
But tomorrow is also Lazy Day, so, you know, pick your poison.

Fights to the death were commonplace at the Ancient Olympics.
(*Warning: This fact obviously gets a bit dark.)
While the Modern Olympics might be all about building bridges and bringing the world together in the spirit of friendly competition, the Ancient Olympics weren’t quite so civil. At least, not for some competitors. In fact, the ancient games featured some seriously brutal events that make today's cage matches look like friendly games of tag.
The most notorious of these ancient events was a sport called 'pankration,' a vicious blend of wrestling and boxing that left little to the imagination - and often left competitors fighting for their lives.
Pankration was considered the ultimate test of strength, endurance, and, quite frankly, survival. In this no-holds-barred event, nearly anything and everything was allowed. Competitors could choke each other, try to break bones, resort to noogies, basically whatever it took to make their opponent submit. In the pankration, only two things were off-limits - biting and eye-gouging. But nose, ear, and groin gouging were absolutely fair game.
Now, you might think with such brutal rules, athletes would have been dropping like flies. And you wouldn't be too far off. While athletes could technically surrender by waving a finger, the ole finger waggle didn't always guarantee their safety. These fights were often so intense that surrender came too late, and athletes died from their injuries.
Why, you ask, would anyone willingly participate in such a dangerously bone-headed event? Well, for the ancient Greeks, pankration was the ultimate display of arete - excellence, virtue, and the ideal of manliness. Winning in pankration didn't just earn you a laurel wreath. It immortalized you as a hero, someone who literally risked it all for glory. “Brawn Over Brains” might have been a very fitting motto.
Despite its brutal nature, pankration remained one of the most popular events at the ancient Olympics until the games were eventually banned by Emperor Theodosius I in the 4th century A.D.
Thankfully, when the modern games returned, they did so with events where Olympians could focus on breaking records instead of noses. Which is good, because I think it’s safe to say, an Olympic journey is much sweeter when it doesn't end in a trip to the afterlife.
AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE) 🚧
Here are some things Around the Valley (and the Olympics!) we think might be of interest -
The Final Weekend 🎉
Welp, we’ve almost made it through the Olympics. Things wrap up this weekend with a whole slew of finals and a whole lot of medal ceremonies. For those who wanna watch the big finale, the Closing Ceremony airs live at noon on Sunday on NBC. An hour before that (at 11 am), there’s also a recap show with the highlights of the Olympics. So, if you feel like you’ve missed some stuff, Sunday is your chance to get the abridged version.
Expect Road Closures 🚧
Due to a campaign stop by Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, expect sudden, random traffic disruptions around the Valley (and the airport) tonight and tomorrow. A flight restriction at Harry Reid International Airport runs from 7:30 pm tonight until 6:45 pm tomorrow, but traffic disruptions are so-far unknown. So, if you have to drive anywhere near Downtown or The Strip tonight or tomorrow morning/afternoon, just expect to get delayed.
