🍔 Weekend Mode: Mabel’s BBQ New Menu, Makers and Music, Lots of Live Music & More!

we've got an extreme heat warning all weekend 🥵 ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Did you get up to anything good this week? We popped down Flamingo to the Palms to try out the new menu at Mabel’s BBQ. And y’all? That was some good barbecue. More on that below.

In other news, it’s a big night in Tivoli Village, and unless you have something truly pressing to do in Downtown this weekend, I recommend staying the heck away from the Arts District.

In today’s Summerlin City Wind Down:

  • Today's Happy Hours & Eats 🍔🏈

  • Did You Know? 🎨

  • Around the Valley 📍

  • Events & Live Music 🍷

  • Beyond Summerlin 🚗

Let's get to it. See you on the other side.

But first up, a quick note from our sponsor.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🍔🏈

We’re traveling a little outside of Summerlin today (but, blessedly, still staying on this side of The Strip), and we’re talking barbecue.

Now, I should preface this by saying that I am pi-cky when it comes to barbecue, and I’ve had a lot of opportunity to dabble. I’ve lived in Tennessee, Texas, Kansas City AND North Carolina, so I believe my credentials are pretty solid. My pulled-pork-dar is off the charts.

So, when I tell you the barbecue we had last night at Mabel’s BBQ at Palms was very good barbecue, I am telling you from a place of deep barbecue concern. Like, if we didn’t have yet more food coming, I could have eaten ALL the barbecue. Okay, so that’s a small lie. There was one piece of burnt ends brisket on the tray that I wouldn’t touch with a ten-and-a-half-foot pole. But, otherwise, I could have eaten it all. I shouldn’t have, and I didn’t, but I could have.

As for the burgers and sandwiches that came after, I could have taken or left them. But that’s beside the point. I went there for barbecue, and the barbecue delivered.

They also have game-day specials and loads of TVs for all you football fans.

Did You Know? 🎨

Frida Kahlo didn't plan to become a painter.

She did paint, and was good at it, but she also had medical ambitions.

Until fate intervened.

(Be warned: there are some slightly queasy details ahead.)

Kahlo might have ended up wearing the smock, but her original career ambition was to don the white coat and become a doctor. But fate (and a really terrible accident) had other plans for her.

On September 17, 1925, Kahlo was taking a bus ride through Mexico City when the bus was involved in a horrifying crash. The accident was brutal. Kahlo was impaled by a handrail and suffered multiple broken bones, including her spine and pelvis, leaving her bedridden for months.

During her recovery, Kahlo picked up a paintbrush to deal with her boredom and loneliness. What began as a therapeutic hobby quickly evolved into a consuming passion. Surrounded by mirrors as she lay in bed, Kahlo began painting self-portraits, using her art to explore her physical and emotional pain.

Her unique style mixed Mexican folk art with surrealism, and she put loads of herself into her work. By the 1930s, that work caught the attention of art critics around the world, and Kahlo would go on to become one of the most influential artists in history.

But, even as her fame grew, Kahlo’s health struggles remained a central theme in her art. Rather than let them define her in a negative way, she used them as a powerful means of expression. So, while she didn't end up in a doctor's office, as originally planned, she did end up becoming a master of healing - her special brand of medicine appearing in galleries and museums worldwide.

Your store for all the f***s you wanna give.

AROUND THE VALLEY 📍

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Life is Beautiful 🧑‍🎤

…but the traffic around Fremont Street is not.

Well, the Life is Beautiful Big Beautiful Block Party starts Downtown today, so if you don’t have tickets, you might want to keep your distance from Fremont Street and the Arts District.

Also, I may have finally reached that age. I recognize literally no one’s name on the lineup.

I’ll Stop Talking About the Heat When It Stops Being Excessive 🥵

I know, I know… You live in Las Vegas. You should be able to handle the heat. Do you really not expect the desert to be hot? So on and so forth. Yada yada yada.

But, come on, my people. It’s the last weekend of September, we’re under another excessive heat warning, and they are forecasting 106°. Which we all know means at least 110°. (That’s right, we see you meteorologists, and we know what you’re doing 🤨)

The point is, it’s gonna be another long, hot weekend here in the Valley. But since we’re not all under several feet of water like many areas in the Southeast right now, I’ll choose gratitude for our roasting-oven climate.
