Did You Know? š¤«
You once could have joined the āOrder of the Pug.ā
Well, if you were Catholic, at least.
Back in the 18th century, when people were really into secret societies, there was one secret society that was based around ā you guessed it ā pugs, those smoosh-faced, curly-tailed little minions that are almost too precious for their own good.
And before you go thinking this was just some simple pug-loving meet-up, you should know this was a legitimate fraternal-esque order with robes, rituals, and everything.
The Order of the Pug (Mops-Orden, for those fluent in fancy old German) was founded in 1740 in Bavaria, Germany in response to the Catholic Church's ban on Freemasonry. Freemasons, as you might know, were all about secret handshakes, mysterious symbols, and building a better world (or pyramids, if conspiracy theorists are to be believed). But when the Vatican gave Freemasonry the boot, some rebellious Catholics decided to form their own societies, and instead of using intimidating symbols like compasses or eyes in pyramids, one group chose pugs. Yup. Pugs. But with good reason. They chose them because pugs were considered loyal, trustworthy, and a little quirky, which made them the perfect mascot for a renegade group.
As for those rituals? There wereā¦ interesting. Members of the Order of the Pug had to pledge their loyalty while wearing pug masks. As part of their initiation, they were also required to kiss a pug statuette on its ass end. Donāt worry, it doesnāt get any freakier than that. The pug ass-kiss was just a symbolic gesture of humility, which, frankly, is a pretty wild way to prove you're down for the cause.
Anyway, Order of the Pug members referred to each other as "Mops" (German for pug), and their meetings were filled with pug-themed symbolism. Members were known to exchange pug-themed trinkets, and meetings often involved dramatic ceremonies full of pomp and pug-umstance. They even wore collars.
If youāre wondering what kind of 18th -Century German would be into this sort of thing, the answer was nobles. Lots of them. They converged on these pug parties like dogs on a bone.
But before we continue to make fun of them, itās worth pointing out that the Order of the Pug welcomed both men and women, which was pretty progressive for the time. Unfortunately, it couldnāt last long. The Order faded into obscurity as Freemasonry regained favor and Europe moved on to other strange historical hobbies (looking at you, Victorian sĆ©ance parties).
But for one brilliant, shining moment in the 18th century, pugs were the center of a secret society that blended rebellion, loyalty, and a little bit of absurdity.
