🎆 Weekend Mode: July 4th Prep, Live Music & West Nile

There's another visible rocket launch tonight!

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!

And Happy Last Weekend of Pride! If you haven't done so yet, don't forget to celebrate yourself. Today is also the anniversary of the actual launch of the Stonewall Riots, so, of all the weekends of Pride, this is the one to give a special tip of your hat to those who came before you. (If you feel donate-y, the Stonewall Foundation can always use your support. )

Now, into the 4th of July weekend. 🎆 Or would that be next weekend? Since the 4th falls on Thursday, I guess it would be next weekend. But we'll just say we have a holiday bookended by weekends and you can get your grill fired up on both of them if you want.

Also, don't forget, you can adopt a pet until 7 pm today or tomorrow from 11 am to 7pm fee-free at The Animal Foundation. (Or pick up a collar and tags for the doggos or kittehs you already have on Sunday between 11 am and 3 pm.)

And it’s your last day to vote in the Nevada SPCA calendar contest. So, if you have a fur-ball you’ve been meaning to put a couple dollars down on, you’re down to the wire.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS (Featuring Tragedy) 😟🎵

Welp. Apparently, the Fried Pickles are no longer on the Honey Salt Happy Hour menu, which is an honest-to-God tragedy. (Shoutout to Alex B. for being the bearer of bad news.) Sorry if I led anyone astray. I’m going to go eat a pint of ice cream and weep now. I mean, WHY WOULD THEY?!?

Anyway *sigh* if you like some tunes with your cheap Happy Hour eats, it can be a pretty hard combo to come by. That said, there is one place where Happy Hour proudly overlaps with live music tonight, and a couple of others where you can listen to a some live piano music if your linger over your drink long enough.

Did You Know? 🖐️

Your fingernails grow faster on hot summer days.

It might seem like an old wives’ tale, but it’s true. When temperatures rise and days get longer, your nail-growth kicks into high gear.

The science behind this summertime nail spurt lies in your body's increased blood circulation. Warmer weather boosts blood flow, delivering more nutrients to your nail matrix, which sounds sci-fi, but is really just the patch of cells at the base of your nail where nail growth beings. With this increased supply of oxygen and nutrients, your nails have all the ingredients they need to grow faster and stronger.

But, although heat alone is enough to cause a nail growth spurt, sunlight also plays a role. In summer, you're more likely to spend time outside soaking up that sweet, sweet vitamin D, which helps your body absorb calcium, an essential mineral in maintaining strong nails.

So, if you think your nails have been in hyperdrive as the weather’s warmed up, it more than just your imagination. Both your fingernails and toenails should be sprouting faster. But since your toenails grow slower than your fingernails (about 1 mm per month compared to 3 mm growth for fingernails), you may not notice those as much. Until, that is, they put that inevitable hole in your sock.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🏡

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Keep Looking Up 🚀

Did you see that rocket go by on Wednesday? If not, you’ll get another chance tonight. SpaceX is launching their Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base around 8 pm. When they launched the same rocket from the same base on Sunday, plenty of people reported seeing its smoky trail in the sky.

West Nile? More Like West No-Thanks 🦟

Yesterday the Southern Nevada Health District issued a report verifying the first two confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Clark County this mosquito season. They've found West Nile-positive mosquitoes in 30 different Clark County zip codes (and the virus that causes St. Louis encephalitis in 5 different zip codes), so wear long sleeves and pants when you can and watch out for them skeeters!
