Budweiser Clydesdales have to audition.

Okay, not really. But they do have to meet a strict set of criteria in order to make the team.

The Budweiser Clydesdales may get a lot of the horse spotlight, but these iconic horses don't just trot their way into fame. They're held to some serious standards, and it's not just about having a majestic mane or a solid work ethic. Though, both properly help.

In order to join the prestigious hitch team, a Budweiser Clydesdale has to tick some very specific boxes:

Height: Every Clydesdale must stand at least 18 hands tall (that's about 6 feet at the shoulder, for those of us who don't measure in "hands"). Or, basically, they've got to be big enough to make a wagon look like a toy.

Color: Each Clydesdale has to rock that iconic look. Only horses with a bay coat (that deep reddish-brown shade), a white blaze on their face, and four white stockings are even considered. If you're a Clydesdale with a white blaze and three stockings? Sorry, close but no hitch.

Temperament: The Budweiser crew isn't about that wild, high-strung energy. These horses must have a calm, even-keeled disposition, perfect for handling crowds, cameras, and whatever other chaos comes with being a beer ambassador.

Gender: You hate to see it, but only geldings (male horses that have been gelded) make the team. Stallions are too unpredictable, and mares - well, Budweiser just doesn't hire them. Calling HRā€¦

Age and Size: To pull those iconic wagons, these horses have to be at least 4 years old, fully matured, and weigh a hefty 1,800 to 2,300 pounds. That's a lot of horsepower, quite literally.

But just making the team doesnā€™t mean these horsesā€™ work is done.

Once they've ticked all the boxes, the chosen few undergo rigorous training to learn how to work as a hitch team, pull a wagon, and pose for photos like the supermodels of the equine world. It's basically horse boot camp.

But those perks? Pretty sweet. Budweiser Clydesdales live in state-of-the-art stables, have a team of caretakers who cater to their every need, and get flown to events in specially designed trailers. They're essentially beer-brand royalty.

No Bud, though. Rumor has it not a one of these heavyweights can handle their booze.
