🍟 Weekend Mode: French Fries, Mirage Regrets, & More!
Shark Week is almost over 🦈
TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Is this it? Is this somewhat cloud-covered sky the break we’ve been waiting for? Or is all just wildfire smoke from California and Arizona? Let’s be positive and say that it’s just nice waking up to a 110-degree forecast instead of a 115+ degree forecast for a day. 🥵
In today’s Summerlin City Wind Down:
Today's Happy Hours & Eats 🍟

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🍟
It’s National French Fry Day, and while there are a few deals at national fast food joints today, you have to download their apps to get them. So, we’re gonna skip those suckers, and stick with Happy Hours that we know have some tasty fries on their menus.
If you’re craving that salty, crunchy goodness, here’s where we know the fries are good, in order from the cheapest to the priciest. Sorry, they’re mostly in Downtown Summerlin. That’s just the way the fries crumbled.
Makers & Finders (Downtown Summerlin) - Crispy Fries (A Basic, Skinny Fry) $5
Frankie’s Uptown (Downtown Summerlin) - Truffle Fries (A Parm-Heavy, But Truffle-Light Fry) - $6.15
HarlØ Steakhouse (Downtown Summerlin) - Herbed Fries & Sauce Flight (An Average-Sized Fry With A Bevy of Sauce Options)
Trattoria Reggiano (Downtown Summerlin) - Truffle Fries (An Average-Sized Fry With Notable Truffle Flavor)
And for those feeling a bit more fry-venturous, we also have our ringer - the Butcher Fries at Echo & Rig. Tied for cheapest, I can’t really include them on our “tasty fry” list, because it’s hard to decide if these things really count as “French fries.” There is a LOT going on here. But they are tasty.
Echo & Rig (Tivoli Village) - Butcher Fries (An Average-Sized Fry/Teriyaki Bowl)
Not feeling fries tonight? Check out our full list of Friday Happy Hours.
And since today and tomorrow are the last two days of Shark Week, 🦈 I’d be remiss not to point you toward Chili’s $6 Marg of the Month, which is about as sharktastic as it gets.
Did You Know? 👨🏻⚕️
A surgeon once killed three people in a single surgery.
And, no, it wasn't a triple surgery.
So, just how does a surgeon kill three people while operating on only one?
Well, meet Robert Liston, a 19th-century surgeon known for his incredible speed and skill in an era when anesthesia was just a dream and antiseptics were unheard of. Liston was a rockstar of the operating theater, famous for his rapid amputations. His motto might as well have been "speed saves lives," because he believed the faster the surgery, the less time patients had to suffer.
Unfortunately, Liston’s speed surgeries didn’t always go as planned. Occasionally he would cut off the wrong body part, an extra body party, or just generally jack things up pretty badly.
Liston’s greatest claim to notoriety, though, came on one fateful day when the stars aligned for him to sweep the entire operating theater with his somewhat careless ways.
During a particularly hasty and zealous leg amputation, Liston accidentally sliced through his assistant's fingers and nicked the coat of a spectator. The spectator, shocked by his sudden participation in the theatrics and the sight of the blood, had a heart attack and died at the scene.
The patient and Liston’s assistant survived… for a few days, after which they both died of gangrene.
Thus, in one fell swoop, Liston's attempt to save one life resulted in the deaths of three people: his patient, his assistant, and one very unfortunate bystander.
So, the next time you mess up at your job or some other project of importance, remember it’s nearly impossible to mess up as badly as one Robert Liston.
AROUND THE VALLEY 🏡
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
Or Maybe It’s Not Worth a Gamble? 🎰
Yesterday, we talked about The Mirage and the $1.6 million they have to legally give away. I even went so far as to suggest it might be worth braving The Strip. Well, today I apologize for my brains being mush.
Have you seen what’s been going on at The Mirage?!? People are losing their ever-lovin’ minds! Like, I get that it’s $1.6 million (I’d like a little chunk of that myself), but human decency people! Geesh.
Holding Aces 🏀
The Las Vegas Aces play today at 4:30 pm our time.
If you’ve heard a lot about the Aces and their last two WNBA championship wins, but are wondering how good the team really is, the upcoming Olympics should slam dunk that question. The Aces are sending more than half their players (6 of 11) to the Olympics. Four of those players will represent Team USA, while the other two will play for Spain and Azerbaijan.
