Did You Know? š¶š¶š±
When you get chills from music, it's called āfrisson,ā and humans are the only species that experience this phenomenon.
Absorb them feels, yāall.
When you hear a haunting violin melody or that soloist who hits THAT note, and you break out into unexpected goosebumps, you are experiencing a decidedly human thing. Animals just donāt respond to music the way that we do. But that doesn't mean they donāt like it. They do! Theyāre just really picky. In fact, they are pretty much music snobs with highly specific tastes.
Take cats, for instance. Play them Beethoven, and they'll just yawn at youā¦ to be fair, though, this is also true for a lot of humans. But where cats differ from humans is that if you crank up some music specifically composed for feline ears - featuring high-pitched tones and tempos that mimic purring - they're suddenly all in. Mesmerized. They might even vibe harder than you do at a concert!
Cows aren't so picky, but they do have a preference for the mellow stuff. Studies show that dairy cows exposed to slow, calming music produce more milk. About 3% more. Which isnāt much, but pretty impressive for something that only requires putting on a little soft jazz or easy listening.
And dogs? Well, it turns out they've got a thing for reggae and soft rock. (Apparently, dogs and I have a lot in common.) Shelter dogs exposed to these genres show lower stress levels and are less likely to bark. So, thereās a little tip for you: when your dog starts acting a little too hype, just swap out that Top 40 for a laid-back island beat.
But while animals have been proven to enjoy a tune or two, they simply donāt experience music the same way we do. They may bop along, but they will never know the chills that we humans feel from a perfect crescendo or a tear-jerking ballad. And it all has to do with the way our human brains process music. While animals hear music and think ādang, this is pretty relaxing" or "hey, this reminds me of food!," we process music as art, which connects the sounds we hear to complex emotions and memories. Basically music and art trigger deep existential vibes, and animals are way more chill than we are. Lucky them!
Of course, there are far worse things to experience than that fingers-running-up-your-spine feeling you might get in the middle of an Adele concert. So, perhaps I should say lucky us.

AROUND THE VALLEY šāļø
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
The Raiders Have a New Coach š
Know anything about Pete Carroll? I donāt. Or at least I didnāt before today.
Now, I know Pete Carroll is a 73-year-old former Super Bowl champ, and āabout as good as it getsā when it comes to coaching football. He also āappears to have the energy of a 35-year-old,ā which is about twice the energy that I have.
Anyway, the point is, heās the Raiders new coach.
Enjoy This Weekās Brief Cold Spell? āļø
How about a little precipitation to go along with it?
Starting Saturday night, thereās a good chance of rain in the Valley, with an even better chance of rain on Sunday and Monday.
The good news is, itās not expected to drop below the mid-30s at our elevation, which will at least keep that rain above freezing and the driving on our roads slightly less chaotic.
It IS, however, supposed to drop buckets of snow in the nearby mountains, so a flake or two over the Westside isnāt completely outside the realm of possibility.
