Did You Know? šŸ…

Tomatoes are saucy in more ways than one.

They are so saucy, in fact, that back in the day, they earned themselves the sultry nickname "love apples."

Awwww. Theyā€™re in love ā¤ļø

Just what the heck is a love apple, you might ask... for a decidedly good reason. Well, the old name stemmed from the widespread belief that these red, shiny fruits were potent aphrodisiacs. It's a tale that mixes botany with a dash of romantic mystique. Or, basically, Naughty Beauty & the Beast.

When tomatoes sauntered onto the European scene in the 16th century, their deep red color caused quite a stir. Since red was (and is) commonly associated with passion and love, people assumed that eating them could ignite the flames of desire. This reputation was undoubtedly helped along by the tomato's resemblance to known aphrodisiac the mandrake plant, which got frequent mentions in classical love potions and literature as a stirrer of desire. Or, basically, a naughty blender.

Most interesting, perhaps, is the fact that this belief in tomatoes' seductive powers wasn't just whimsical fancy. It actually influenced how tomatoes were perceived and used for quite some time. The French were the first to call tomatoes "pommes d'amour" or "love applesā€ - of course, they were - suggesting a delightful blend of culinary and amorous potential. Because, in France, everything has the potential for amour.

Meanwhile, in Italy, they were embracing the tomato with less romance but equal passion, incorporating it deeply into their cuisine to create what would become their most iconic dishes. Or was it with less romance? Because, let's be real, a fine Italian meal puts just about anyone in the mood.

Now, for the disappointing news -

Despite their scandalous reputation, and onetime nickname, tomatoes are not scientifically proven aphrodisiacs. Which is probably why you don't get turned on every time you eat a salad.

AROUND THE VALLEY šŸ“

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Is This Tailgating Now? šŸˆ

Want to join the Masqueraid? Youā€™ll first have to put yourself on the waiting list. Tickets went on sale today for this spanking-new premium tailgating experience at Allegiant Stadium.

Billed as part pro football, part masquerade (hence the name, Iā€™m assuming), and part pirate adventure, Masqueraid takes place on a 45-foot pirate ship outside the stadium on home game days. The ā€œshipā€ holds 350 Raiders fans, and doesnā€™t require a game ticket. And I have just one question.

What fresh hell is this?

Isnā€™t tailgating an activity you do before GOING to a game? And doesnā€™t it require an actual tailgate, or at least a trunk/parking lot?

Now, if the Raiders want to hold an exclusive carnival before every home game with pirate ships and planks, far be it for me to stand in their way. But. This. Is. Not. Tailgating.

Where is the Love? ā¤ļø

Itā€™s gonna be at Planet Hollywood come February. (A very fitting month, eh?) The Black Eyed Peas will be doing a 15-date residency at the resort, with concerts in February, March, and May. If you want early dibs, tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 am. Or now, if youā€™ve got a presale code.

And, no, I donā€™t know what April did to themā€¦
