TODAYāS WIND DOWN PRESENTED BY
Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Feeling spooky? Itās another Halloween-themed weekend on the West Side.
But itās also Pride weekend in Downtown Vegas. You know because Juneās too hot here, and they thought it would be cooler this weekend. And I suppose it is, you know, cooler than it was in June. But, well, will this summer EVER END? Like I can still enjoy my pumpkin spice latteā¦ and I willā¦ but I would enjoy it a whole lot more with a slight chill in the air. You know what I mean? I guess Iāll have to make do with Halloween-style chills.

Did You Know? š
Shadows are darker on the Moon than they are here on Earth.
Thatās right, the Moon takes "shade" to a whole new level. While here on Earth, shadows are pretty tame thanks to our atmosphere, which scatters light around like an over-enthusiastic glitter bomb, the Moon doesn't have that luxury. Without an atmosphere to diffuse the sunlight, shadows on the Moon are like little black holes, swallowing up all the light and making things vanish into absolute darkness.
The process of light-scattering on Earth is called Rayleigh scattering, and what it does is brightens shadows and makes objects within them more visible. Thatās why you can still see details and textures within a shadow.
On the Moon, though, it's like someone cranked the contrast all the way up. There's no air to scatter light, so when something blocks the Sun, that shadow is nearly as black as deep space. Weāre not talking ālights out in your bedroom with blackout curtainsā dark, weāre talking "where'd my legs go?" dark.
In fact, the moonās darkness is so dark, even astronauts were ill-prepared for it. During the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong mentioned how tricky it was to navigate in the shadow of the lunar module because he couldnāt see his feet.
But if you think the moon has the darkest darkness, I hate to break it to you, but space gets a whole lot darker. Though it looks like a full-on light void in a moon shadow, it actually isnāt. The moonās shadows are illuminated ever so slightly by sunlight reflecting off the lunar surface and Earth. So, it does have some cosmic mood lighting. Just not nearly enough to keep you from feeling like you're walking into an abyss.
So, if you get a little scared in the darkness here on Earth, comfort yourself with the fact that at least it doesnāt disappear your feet. Or does it? I mean, how often do you really look down at them?
