TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🍹

Only a few days in to the new year, and Chili’s is already trying to get you to break your resolutions. They’re not even being shy about it. Their Marg of the Month is literally called The Resolution Breaker!

  • Chili’s Grill & Bar

  • Boca Park Area

  • The Resolution Breaker - $6

    All January Long

Want to stick to those resolutions? Or going dry this January? Did you know many bars and restaurants will make any cocktail on their menu into a mocktail for the Happy Hour price? In fact, most of them will be delighted to charge you the same price for a drink sans liquor! Just ask.

Did You Know? 🎉

The earliest recorded New Year's festivities date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon.

And these folks really knew how to party - ancient Mesopotamian style.

Back around 2000 BCE, Babylonians celebrated the start of the new year not in January but in late March, during the vernal equinox. Why March? Well, it's when spring started springing, crops were planted, and the world felt full of fresh starts. Makes more sense, actually…

Anyway, their 12-day festival was called Akitu, and it was a mix of religious ceremonies, royal drama, and, let’s be real, probably a little too much barley beer.

Akitu wasn't just your average "pop some confetti and call it a night" kind of affair. It was a full-on production. During the festival, slightly-drunken Babylonians would parade statues of their gods through the city to symbolize their victory over chaos (wouldn’t we all like to get there?). The main event celebrated Marduk, the chief deity, who got a major PR boost every Akitu as the bringer of order and prosperity.

But this festival wasn't just a celestial celebration - it had some political vibes. The reigning king had to participate in a little ritual humiliation. He would step down from his throne temporarily, get slapped (literally) by a priest to show his humility, and then ask for the gods' blessing to keep ruling. If the gods approved, he'd get his job back. If not...well, let's just say the ancient Babylonians weren't afraid of a leadership shake-up.

Babylonians were also the OG resolution-makers. They'd vow to pay off debts or return borrowed farm equipment - no word on whether or not they actually did - because they believed sticking to their promises would earn them favor with the gods for the year ahead.

So, if you feel like your New Year’s was a bit of a bust, you get a second chance come March. That’s when the Babylonians were out there setting the blueprint for fresh starts and festive vibes.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🎤

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

That’s MRS. Jackson If You’re Nasty

The queen Jackson - Katherine - was spotted in Las Vegas this past Monday. That’s Mama Jackson, like mother of the The Jackson Five and Janet. In fact, Janet was whom was out to support as Janet Jackson launched her Resorts World residency.

So, big ups to the woman who gave us the people responsible for THAT version of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” the “Thriller” dance, and “Rhythm Nation.”

You Only Got Tonight and Tomorrow…

The current decorations are only up through January 4, then the Conservatory goes dark from January 5-10 to set up the Lunar New Year Display, which launches on January 11!

The Sleep App That Forbes' Rated 5 Stars 😱

The app Forbes’ said helps "users achieve high-quality sleep by creating and maintaining effective sleep routines.” is back with new sounds and features!

Now featuring over 300 unique sounds to build to fall asleep to, a personalized sleep tracker and more. It’s no wonder over 65 million people have downloaded this app for better sleep.
