Seriously, though, letās give three cheers to Shawna for filling in on Tuesday. (Honestly, I think sheād just been waiting for the opportunity to wax poetic about Lucilleās fried green tomatoes. š And for good reason.)
Have you voted yet? If not, todayās your last chance to vote early. So, if youāre not doing anything this afternoon, you might want to pop out to an early voting location and beat the rush, aka long lines, on Tuesday.

Did You Know? š¦
An overabundance of Thanksgiving turkeys led to the first TV dinner.
Back in 1953, a Swanson employee got a little too enthusiastic with the turkey order and ended up with a whopping 260 tons of leftover birds after Thanksgiving. That's enough turkey to feed, well, pretty much everyone for Thanksgiving.
Left to rot, those turkeys would have been a major loss for the company, but salesman Gerry Thomas had a wild idea. First, keep those turkeys cold while he brainstormed. Which seems simple, but was rather comically not. You see, those 260 tons of turkeys were already in refrigerated train cars. Perfect, right? You would think. But those cars' cooling functions only worked while they were moving, which meant Swanson had to pay to keep the train chugging back and forth between Nebraska and the East Coast just to keep things from thawing out.
While the train kept rolling, Thomas was desperate for an idea. And he had a lightbulb moment. The Swanson company had some compartmented metal trays on site, and it occurred to Thomas they could sell complete easy-to-make meals in that format, kind of like an airplane dinner with a Thanksgiving twist.
But before they could bring that turkey train in and start carving up the birds, they had one essential thing to figure out - how to heat up those trays to cook meat and veggies at the same time without everything turning into mush or a bacterial buffet. Enter Betty Cronin, Swanson's resident bacteriologist, who figured out the logistics of cooking an entire meal at once without producing pea puree or death by turkey.
Once Cronin nailed the details, Swanson TV dinners hit the shelves at just the right time, as I Love Lucy was making TVs a must-own in every household. At 98 cents a pop, consumers could enjoy a full meal without hours of kitchen duty, perfect for the new TV-loving public.
By the end of 1954, Swanson had sold over 10 million frozen turkey dinners, putting the TV dinner industry officially on the map, and proving once again that necessity, or rather, a ridiculous amount of frozen turkey, is the mother of invention.

AROUND THE VALLEY š
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
Not Ready for Halloween to Be Over? š
Well, you may not have to wait until next October to get your thrills and chills again. Universal Horror Unleashed, an off-shoot of Universal Studiosā Halloween Horror Nights, is coming to Las Vegas next year. The attraction will consist of four - yes, four! - haunted houses meant to scare your pants off, and will be stationed at Area 15. Thereās no launch date yet, but the attraction will be year-round once its doors creak open.
Vegas Needs More Treesā¦ Duh š“
Do you notice it gets super hot here? Like maybe hotter each year? Well, trees can help with that! This isnāt news to anyone who has ever, you know, stood in the shade, but trees arenāt just super sexy, theyāre also super useful when it comes to keeping temperatures down.
But Vegas can benefit from trees more than most cities.
A study by the U.S. Geological Survey found that Las Vegas would get considerably more benefit from trees than cities with higher humidityā¦ which is pretty much every city. The study showed that trees in the metro area could create a cooling effect of 7Ā° C. Thatās 45Ā° F, yāall! That means those 120Ā° days that just wouldnāt quit this summer could feel more like 80Ā°. Gee, it almost seems like somethinā worth doing.
