🌊 Weekend Mode: Cheap Waterparks, Sammy Hagar’s Return, Cat Video Fest & More!
and so much cheap beer today
Happy Friday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Ready for the weekend? I mean, if you do weekends. If you’re on a less structured schedule, sometimes a random Wednesday afternoon is really good too. You know what I mean?
Anyway, if you like a good swim/slide and want to indulge yourself for the rest of the season, the Cowabunga waterparks are offering ½-price “season passes” through August 10th. 🌊 Just know the season is slowing down. Starting on August 11th, the parks are only open on weekends through September 22nd. Still, it's a pretty good deal if you think you'll use it. (*HINT: The Cowabunga Vegas pass is a much better deal than the Cowabunga Canyon pass, because for ten bucks more it includes entry into both parks - Cowabunga Canyon in Summerlin and Cowabunga Bay in Henderson - plus parking. So, if you’re thinking about buying, make sure you read that small print!)

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🍺
Well, it has to be beer again, because it’s International Beer Day, a day to celebrate all the beers from the ales to the lagers to the pilsners to the stouts. (Though, in my experience, we could just call this Father’s Day, Part II: The Drinkening.)
So, if you love your varietals, you’re going to need a place that offers loads of beer variety on their Happy Hour menus. Lucky for you, there are several such places with Happy Hours tonight. Just be forewarned, tomorrow is International Hangover Day, so, you know, bear that in mind… or should I say beer that in mind. 😝

Did You Know? 🧐
Tug of war was once an Olympic event.
From the year 1900 to the year 1920, this quintessential playground game was a serious sport in the Summer Olympics. Athletes from around the world faced off over the thin line, trying to grapple to glory in what had to be one of the funnest, most ridiculous Olympic showdowns ever.
The rules were simple, yet intense (just like they were in your own playground days). Two teams of eight faced off, rope clutched in their determined hands, each trying to pull the other team across a line in the middle. Victory was clinched when a team managed to drag their opponents a total of six feet within the five-minute time limit. If neither team achieved this, the team that made the most progress was declared the winner.
While this all might sound a bit absurd, is it really? I think any of us who’ve ever had our hands on a tug of war rope knows it takes a considerable amount of strength and team coordination to prove victorious. And it brought in some of the Olympics most unusual competitors.
During the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, the American team was predominantly made up of hefty policemen, who unsurprisingly took home the gold. Four years later, the 1908 London Olympics saw a bit of controversy when the Liverpool police team was accused of cheating because they wore heavy boots that supposedly gave them extra traction. That accusation didn't hold, and they kept their gold medals, because apparently there were no real rules about shoes. (Though, I do hope they gave the athletes gloves, unlike my school’s Field Day where they wanted every middle-schooler to learn the meaning of intense rope-burn pain.)
It was after the 1920 Antwerp Games that Tug of War was quietly retired as an Olympic event. Bummer, I say. Maybe we could lobby for a comeback, because this is one event I would absolutely love to see returned to the Olympic roster.
AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE) 💍
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
An Olympic Proposal 💍
So, here’s a nice thing that happened.
Today, at the olympics, Chinese badminton player Huang Yaqiong and her partner Zheng Siwei won the gold in badminton mixed doubles. Then, as Huang walked off the podium with her gold medal and flowers, her boyfriend, Liu Yuchen, proposed to her.
On one side of my brain, I think, “Ah, that’s so sweet.” On the other, I think, “What? Was he like waiting to see if she was an Olympic champion before deciding to seal the deal?” 😉
Feeling Hagar-d? 🎤
Or would you like to?
In honor of Sammy Hagar’s return to Vegas, Palms Casino Resort is holding a Rockin’ Redhead Pool Party at Sammy’s Island next Saturday (August 10th) from 10 am to 6 pm. The event is free and open to the public (21+), and features themed bars, exclusive ticket giveaways to Sammy’s Birthday Bash at the Pearl Theater on October 4, and live performances. (Just don’t expect to see Hagar there.)
