NYC’s Central Park is almost twice the size of the country of Monaco.

If you watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade yesterday and caught those sweeping shots of Central Park - standing out like a green thumb in the middle of New York City - you might have wondered, "Just how big is that place?"

The answer is big. Very big. Central Park is so big, in fact, it's nearly twice the size of the entire country of Monaco. Yes, the country. As in, an actual sovereign nation where people live, work, and yacht about in obscene luxury.

To be exact, Central Park spans a sprawling 843 acres of lush greenery, winding paths, and iconic landmarks. Meanwhile, Monaco, nestled along the French Riviera, covers just 499 acres. So, basically, you could fit Monaco into Central Park with room to spare for a pretty extravagant Thanksgiving Day game of touch football (or a couple of extra zoos and ice rinks, if you're sticking to the park's usual vibe).

But Central Park's impressive size isn't just about one-upping tiny countries. It's the crown jewel of Manhattan, offering New Yorkers a much-needed escape from the urban chaos. Designed in the mid-1800s by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, it was an ambitious project aimed at giving city dwellers a place to reconnect with nature - or at least somewhere to walk off all those bagels and pastrami sandwiches.

And when it came to building Central Park, people went to WORK. Those beautiful lakes? Dug by hand. The trees? All planted. The rolling hills? Sculpted with dirt and a little ingenuity. It's the ultimate backyard for 8 million people, complete with bridges, fountains, theaters, and enough pigeons to outnumber Monaco's population several times over.

So, while Monaco is a small country to be sure, Central Park should still get its props. 843 acres of gorgeous greenery is nothing to sneeze at on an island that is less than 15,000 acres overall. Unless it’s allergy season. Then, sneeze away.
