TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Wednesday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Well, it's the last day of July, which feels completely absurd. I don't know where the year went, but I assume it did happen at some point. Though, it also feels like its been forever since the winter holidays or since it's been a reasonable temperature here. (Apparently, that’s not just my imagination. But more on that in Around the Valley below.) Somehow time is both flying and standing still at the same time. Is this like a glitch in the matrix thing?
🚨 Don’t forget - we draw our winner later today for our July member’s giveaway - a Makers & Finders gift card. But you’ve still got time to win it by becoming a Summerlin Insider today.
Anyway, on with it!

Did You Know? 🐂
No one knows the true origin story or purpose of the ancient Olympics, but there are two main theories being battled out by historians.
The first theory we'll call the God Theory. The basics of the theory are that the ancient Olympics started as a religious festival held in honor of Zeus, king of the Greek gods. The fact that the games were held in Olympia, a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, complete with grand temples and sacred altars, lends to this theory. It's also, perhaps obviously, where the Olympics got their name.
Another point in favor of this theory is that the early Olympics included a ritual and feast in honor of Zeus. A small number of oxen were burned as an offering to Zeus (because apparently the Olympics and the burning of live animals go together like bread and butter), while a much larger number of oxen were roasted and devoured by participants and spectators in a massive, Zeus-approved feast.
The second theory of Olympic Origin we'll call the Dead Theory. This theory posits that the ancient Olympics began as funeral games held to honor deceased local heroes. The idea is rooted in the Greek tradition of organizing athletic competitions as part of funeral rites. The Dead Theory is supported largely by legend - the legend of Pelops, a hero who is said to have initiated chariot races in Olympia to honor the memory of King Oenomaus.
So, where does the truth lie? In the Gods or with the Dead? Perhaps it's a mixture of both, with the ancient Greeks honoring both their divine and their heroic in one grand, sweaty, ox-filled event.
AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE) 🤸♀️
Here are some things Around the Valley (and the Olympics!) we think might be of interest -
Simone Biles Wins Gold & Sets an Olympic Record 🐐
Team USA has won gold in Women’s Gymnastics, which marks Simone Biles 8th Olympic medal. With this medal, Biles becomes the most medaled American gymnast of all time, and ties her as the American with the most gold medals of all time with 1904 Olympian Anton Heida.
It’s Official 🥵
Vegas is hotter than it’s ever been. At least, as far as the records go.
Just how hot is that? Well, the average daily temperature in Las Vegas topped 100 degrees for the month of July. Average. Daily. Temperature. As in, both the highs and lows all factored in, and it still comes out to over 100 degrees. So, when they told us we were getting no relief at night, we were actually getting no relief at night.
And neither were our air conditioners. Our air conditioner decided to give up on the evening of July 25. We got it fixed pretty fast, I’m glad to say. But it was touch-and-go for a second. Hope everyone else’s ACs troopered through this heat, and here’s to a little cooler Vegas August.
