Did You Know? 🤤
The average American downs about 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving.
If your mouth ain’t openin’ like a T-Rex about to eat a car on Thanksgiving, you’re doing it wrong.
That's like eating two days' worth of food (or more, for some people) in one glorious, gravy-soaked, pie-stuffed marathon. But how does it all add up? Let's dissect the delicious debauchery.
The star of the show, your Thanksgiving dinner plate, is no slouch in the calorie department. A healthy 6-ounce serving of roasted turkey gives you around 340 calories. Add dark meat, and you're basically asking for a calorie encore. Stuffing clocks in at about 300 calories per cup of pure carb heaven. Mashed potatoes lovingly drowned in gravy? Add another 260 calories. Green bean casserole, because even veggies can feel indulgent, adds 230 calories per cup. A warm dinner roll slathered in butter? 150 calories. A smear of tangy, sugary cranberry sauce? Another 110 calories. And that humble slice of pumpkin pie? About 320 calories. But, let’s be real, who stops at just one?
So, your Thanksgiving plate alone? It clocks in at about 1,710 calories. And that's if you don't go back for seconds.
Ah, but Thanksgiving isn't just about dinner, is it? The real calorie damage happens in the margins. Cheese boards, chips and dips, deviled eggs, those tack on an easy 500 calories before you even sit down. A couple of glasses of wine or beer? Boom, 300 more calories. You can double that if you're "celebrating extra hard." And if you thought you'd stop at pie, you were lying to yourself. Another slice? Maybe some cookies? That's at least 400 more calories. All in, those extras stack on another 1,200 calories, bringing our tally to 2,910 calories… so far.
But we're not done. Thanksgiving is a whole-day affair, and leftovers are part of the ritual. A little cold turkey here, some stuffing there, maybe a scoop of leftover potatoes... and the average person tacks on another 1,000 calories before bed. That's not even counting the midnight pie raid!
Whew! That’s a lot of eating! But it’s still only 3,910 calories. So, just where does that extra almost 600 calories come in?
It's those little extras - like laying off the booze, but reaching for a soda, adding a little seasonal creamer to your coffee, or sneaking that extra cookie or two - that push you over the edge into full 4,500-calorie territory.
So, congratulations, you've just consumed the caloric equivalent of a family of raccoons raiding a buffet. But hey, it's Thanksgiving - it's all about gratitude. And this year you can be grateful for an elastic waistband.

Here are some Thanksgiving-related things that may be of interest -
Spidey Returns 🕷️
If you’re a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade person, this year you can welcome back Spiderman. The Spidey balloon will be making its first appearance in the parade in over a decade. So says Macy’s. Officially. Which means I have to believe it. Even though I feel like I’ve seen Spiderman floating over 6th Avenue in more recent years.
Got Family Coming in From Out of Town? 👨👨👦👦
Might want to make plans to keep a plate warm for them. There is stupid weather pretty much everywhere. (You might have noticed from the chilly humidity and gray skies.) There have already been loads of delays and cancellations, and it’s expected to get worse before it gets better. So you may want to prepare for changes of plans in advance.
