Did You Know? ⭐️

Starfish can clone themselves.

That’s right. Last week, we talked about how starfish are all head. Well, that head has an incredible party trick up its sleeve… er, arm. Starfish, or sea stars, not only have the astonishing ability to regenerate lost limbs, they can actually clone themselves. The process is called fission, and while it’s technically a form of asexual reproduction, it sounds like something straight out of Sci-Fi.

Basically, it works like this -

Since starfish have the ability to regenerate lost limbs and their brains are spread throughout their bodies, if a starfish splits in two, both halves get some of that brain and that brain’s ability to regenerate limbs. So, during fission, a starfish splits its central disk (that thick part in the middle) into two and each part regenerates the lost limbs, resulting in two genetically identical starfish.

And while this is certainly a clever way of reproducing in the deep ocean where finding a date is more challenging than in your average rom-com and allows starfish to reproduce when conditions are best, reproduction isn’t the only area in which fission comes in handy. Fission is also a big advantage when it comes to evading predators. Get caught by a shark? No probs. Just drop an arm (and maybe an organ or two) and go on with your day. After all, you can grow them right back.

AROUND THE VALLEY📍

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

The Mirage’s Final Bow 🌋

If you’ve got love for The Mirage, you’ll be happy to know they’re sending it off with honors tomorrow. The casino’s owners, Hard Rock International, are holding a closing ceremony at 9 a.m. before the casino closes for good at 11 a.m.

If they knew how things were gonna go with their $1.6 million last-minute giveaways, they might have planned a closing UFC bout instead.

The Eagles Encore 🦅

If you really wanted to see the Eagles at the Sphere, but watched their tickets get snatched up and put on immediate resale by scalpers, you’re getting another chance. The band has extended their residency AGAIN, adding four dates in January. The tickets go on sale July 26 at 9 a.m., so if hearing “Hotel California” live is on your bucket list, mark those calendars and set those reminders now.
