TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS 😎

In the “every day is a food holiday of some sort” biz, it’s National Eat Your Veggies Day, so you know what that means, I’m about to try to inject some vegetables into your Happy Hour.

Luckily, there are a couple of places that serve veggie dishes on their Happy Hour menus that are actually quite delightful.

My favorite of these veggie-inclusive Happy Hour dishes may be the Hummus + Spicy Feta Dips (with pita crisps and veggies) at Lazy Dog. Though, be warned, I may be biased here because I get very excited whenever I see a radish in the wild. Lazy Dog also has lettuce wraps, Brussels sprouts, and buffalo cauliflower, so you do have quite a few options there.

As far as popularity goes, Brussels sprouts may be the most popular veggie on Happy Hour menus - though I’m not sure the way most places prepare them qualify them as “vegetables,” they do retain essence of veggie and taste good - and you can get them at numerous places.

Also, I’m pretty sure in Happy Hour law French fries count as a vegetable.

THE BRUSSELS OF HAPPY HOUR

Want to dig into some of those rich, not-quite-good for you Brussels? Here’s where you can get them, in some form or other, on the Happy Hour menu.

Did You Know? ☄️

Comets stink.

That’s right. While these celestial wonders might look majestic, they carry a malodorous secret - a smell that is out of this world. Quite literally.

Thanks to the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission and their work with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, we know a comet can carry quite a fetid bouquet. Think rotten eggs, urine and burning matches. But there’s also a hint of almond, if that helps any.

The science behind this cosmic stench involves some seriously pungent chemicals. Comets contain hydrogen sulphide, the same compound that gives rotten eggs their notorious odor, ammonia, the contributor of that sharp urine smell, sulphur dioxide, which has a scent reminiscent of burning matches, plus a dash of hydrogen cyanide, which brings the faint almond smell, but not nearly enough to drown out the rest.

But does that mean comets actually have to smell? After all, we carry some nasty potential odors around inside of us too, and we don’t all go around smelling like rotten-egg Porta potties.

Well, comets are essentially dirty snowballs made of ice, dust, and a mixture of organic compounds. As they approach the sun, they start to warm up, and the ice vaporizes, releasing the gases trapped within. These gases, along with dust particles, are what create a comet's glowing coma and tail, and also its inglorious aroma. So, yeah, if you see a comet that has all the hallmarks of a comet up in the night sky, it is absolutely a giant stink bomb.

TODAY’S  RESTAURANT SPECIALS

Official Restaurant Week was supposed to end last Friday, but they’ve extended it through June 21st.

While not all area restaurants have stayed in the mix, many of them have. So, if you’re having Restaurant Week regrets, here are the places where you can still get your prix fixe through Friday. And a couple of them have dropped their prices.

LOCAL EVENTS TO CHECK OUT

Well, it’s hot and it’s smoky and it’s a good day to stay inside and clean your house (she says to herself), but if you do want to get out, there are a handful of things to do in the area tonight.

I also want to flash forward to a few things coming up later this week and next month.

First up, on Thursday at Cowabunga Canyon (during the day), they are having the “World’s Largest Swim Lesson.” Adults and kids are both welcome, and it’s free for anyone participating. So, if you don’t know how to swim, this may be a great time to learn!

Then, on Sunday at Tivoli Village, they’re having the Cigars & Cars car show. So, if you’ve got a classic ride that’s been revving for an audience, you may want to pre-register for that.

And coming up next month, on July 13, Las Vegas Ball Park hosts the Battle for Vegas charity softball game. Basically, it’s the Golden Knights versus the Raiders in a sport in which none of them are professionals, and tickets are going fast. So, if you want to see it, you might want to secure those seats now.
