and you may win a car with a blood donation this week!

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Monday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Does your body run on blood, and are you willing to give some of it away for a chance at winning a new car? 🧛 If so, it’s a great time to become a blood donor with Vitalant. Everyone who donates blood from now through July 27 has a chance to win a car. All you have to do is make an appointment. Conveniently, there’s a blood drive at Rainbow Library this coming Saturday.

For those with secret passions, it’s also a day to let them shine. Today is National Be a Dork Day, a day I like to celebrate every day, and while I don’t know what my dorkiest trait is exactly because I’m at least 92% dork, KenKen is the thing I get made fun of for the most, so we’ll go with that. Hi. My name is Riley, and I like to do math for fun. 🤓 (If anyone else would like to share their dorkiest traits, know this is a safe space.)

Also, a huge THANK YOU to our newest members. We appreciate the heck out of you. 🙏 You too can support your local team by signing up.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS (MORE WEIRD STUFF) 🍔

I know I talk burgers a lot, and what can I say? Burgers are popular for a reason. But today we’re gonna talk burgers differently. We’re talking mini burgers, aka sliders, aka some weird sliders we’ve found on Happy Hour menus.

First up, at Public School 702, they serve up PB&J Sliders at Happy Hour. And they’re pretty much just what they sound like, but with slight twists. You got your PB (crunchy), your J (blackberry habanero jam), and your sneaky extra B (bacon), all atop baby burgers.

Then, at The Martini, they serve up some Sloppy Sliders, which are also just what they sound like, but with an upgraded twist. They’re basically Wagyu beef sloppy joes.

Are either of them good? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Quite possibly. Are they messy? Yeah. They have to be.

  • Public School 702

  • Downtown Summerlin

  • 3-6 pm

  • The Martini

  • Boca Park Area

  • 3:30-5:30 pm

Prefer your sliders a bit more traditional? You can get basic sliders at these places tonight -

Or, if sliders aren’t gonna scratch that Happy Hour itch, check out our list of other Monday Happy Hours in the area.

Did You Know? 🛰️

The Great Wall of China is NOT actually visible from space.

Despite the frequency with which this “factoid” is thrown around, it’s not actually a fact at all. The misconception that the Great Wall can be seen from space has been debunked by scientists, including astronauts who looked for it with their own eyes, yet it still manages to stick around like a dusty sticky note.

There real facts are this: the Great Wall, impressive as it is, is only about 30 feet wide at its broadest. While that’s pretty substantial for a wall, it’s a slim line from hundreds of miles up in space. And astronauts have confirmed it can’t be seen from the International Space Station, which orbits Earth at an altitude of around 250 miles.

While no one knows exactly how the myth of the Great Wall originated, it likely comes from the sheer awe this wonder of the world. While you may not be able to see it from space, it certainly impresses from the ground. Stretching over 13,000 miles, it's one of the most monumental human constructions ever completed. Unfortunately, it’s also a neutral color, which means it blends into the surrounding landscape, making it nearly impossible to pick out from too far above.

But, not to disappoint, there are some human-built constructions that can be seen from space. These include:

Cities at Night: Like glittering jewelry, the lights of large cities and metropolitan areas shine brightly enough to be seen from orbit.

Major Highways and Airports: Again, the sheer size and lighting help these structures stand out on Earth, especially at night.

The Pyramids of Giza: Under the right conditions, these wonders are just shapely enough to be spotted.

Large Dams: Including the Hoover Dam, which have the advantage of cutting across waterways, making them more visible against the surrounding terrain.

There’s also one structure built by creatures other than humans that is visible from space, but we’ll get to that next Monday 😉

AROUND THE VALLEY 🚙

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

GP (YO)U Save on Energy 😄

Have you ever wondered about just how many GPUS it takes to power the Sphere?

Apparently, it's around 150.

To put that into perspective, most high-end gaming systems use only one to two GPUS, making the Sphere equivalent to 75+ gaming computers.

How does that translate into energy consumption? Exactly how'd you think. The Sphere uses 75x more energy to run than an average gaming computer. This makes it one of the most GPU-intensive and energy-consuming electronic installations in the world.

So, while we can debate whether or not the Sphere is yet another Strip eyesore, we know for a fact it's an energy hog.

Findlay’s Back in Operation 🚙

If you’ve been waiting for service through Findlay Automotive, you’ll be happy to know the company, who’s been dealing with a ransomeware attack that really messed up their biz, is fully functional again.

So, it’s time to get that oil change.
