🏌️Shriners Children’s Open, Rugby in Vegas, Great Gatsby Dance Party, & More!

how many more weeks of triple digit temps?

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Do you already have tickets to the Shriners Children’s Open (or want to get them), but have no idea when it is? 🏌️ Well, the Open, which has been selling tickets for months, finally has a set date. The golf tournament will take place October 17-20 at TPC Summerlin.

In more torturous news, like the groundhog emerging mid-winter to deliver a bad report, the weather experts have spoken. 🥵 They say we can expect at least six more weeks of triple-digit temperatures. So, keep those ice trays full, I guess.

Also, time is running out to become a Summerlin Insider and put your name in the running for our July giveaway - a Makers & Finders gift card. 🚨 We draw on July 31st!

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 👩‍🍳

It's Culinarians Day, a day that encourages us to cook for ourselves and for others. Personally, I enjoy cooking… much of the time. But if you don't enjoy cooking, it's also a great day to appreciate those who cook for you, from your mama or partner to the chef at your favorite restaurant.

It's also a great day to enjoy the fruits of one of those chef's labors at Happy Hour. Maybe even with a dalliance into something you’re not quite sure about?

For a list of options by cuisine and region, check out our Thursday Happy Hours page.

Did You Know? 🕊️

The idea of crowning ancient Olympians with olive branch wreaths was based on a prophecy by the Oracle at Delphi.

According to legend, the Oracle at Delphi, a truly gifted seer or simply high on divine fumes, proclaimed that winners of the ancient games should be crowned with wreaths made from the wild olive trees, or kotinos, that grew in abundance around Olympia.

While this might sound like some wicked, ancient PR stunt, it wasn't just a random flora choice. The olive trees of Olympia were considered sacred - gifts from the gods themselves. (As a true lover of olives, I GET it.) It was Heracles, the mythical hero, the Greeks believed brought the olive tree from the land of Hyperboreans to Olympia, planting it to create the grove of Altis, the same grove from which the first Olympic wreaths were cut and crafted.

But it wasn't just legend that gave the olive branch its deep significance. Along with being tasty, plentiful, and mythical, the olive tree held symbolic meaning in ancient Greece. This gift from the gods was associated with peace, wisdom, and victory, basically all the virtues you'd expect and want in a top-tier athlete representing your territory.

As a symbol of peace, the olive branch was also a particularly good fit for the earliest Olympics. During the games, "ekecheira," aka an Olympic Truce, was declared, allowing athletes from warring city-states to travel to and from Olympia safely. That Truce is one of the Olympic ideals that carries on to this day.

So, this Olympics when you see an Olympian facetiously biting down on their gold medal, know it once could have been a far tastier treat.

AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE) 🏉

Here are some things Around the Valley (and the Olympics!) we think might be of interest -

A Seine-ful Opening Ceremony

If you don’t have anywhere to be during the day tomorrow (or if you have a super cool boss), you can watch the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics Live. And it will be an Opening Ceremony unlike any of us have ever seen. Instead of taking place inside a stadium, France is taking the ceremony out into the streets… er, the river. Delegations from each country will float into the Olympics on a boat parade along the Seine. This marks the first time in the history of the Summer Games the Opening Ceremony has not taken place inside a stadium.

If you’ve got that down-time, the Opening Ceremony airs at 10:30 am (PST) on NBC, with a pre-show starting at 9 am.

Rugby Comes to Vegas 🏉

After the Olympics get you totally addicted to Rugby - come on, you know it happens - and you’re jonesing for a live game, you’ll have a pretty cool chance in 2025 when several international rugby leagues return to Vegas to hold games at Allegiant Stadium.

Four games will be played on Saturday, March 1, 2025 starting at 1:30 pm and lasting into the night. Tickets are on pre-sale now, and go on sale to the general public at 4 p.m. today.
