📢 Senior Idol, Airport Upgrades, Pup Fundraiser & More!

it's a slow night for events

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Monday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Feeling charitable? If so, you’ve got a couple of opportunities to help raise funds coming up on the horizon.

First up, this Sunday (August 25) is the Pour for Paws Fundraiser at Emerald at Queensridge. 🐶 The event features dancing, wine, craft beer and hors d'oeuvre, plus swag bags and the chance to win prizes. Tickets are $55/person and proceeds go to Pawtastic Friends and Hearts Alive Village. If that sounds like a pretty decent way to spend your Sunday night, you can get your tickets here.

Then, in November, there’s an American Heart Association Heart Walk at Tivoli Village. 🚶 While it’s still a few months away, you can register now (and for free) if you want to be a part of it.

And a huge THANK YOU to our newest members. We appreciate the heck out of you. 🙏 You too can support your local team (and put yourself in the running for our monthly prize drawings) by signing up.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🥔

It’s National Potato Day, so I must pose the question - is there any form in which potatoes are not delicious? I mean, aside from raw? Because, if there is, I haven’t tasted it. But I’ve definitely had lots of AMAZING potatoes.

The absolute best potatoes I’ve ever put in my mouth were at a place called Manaw Wine Bar in Valencia, Spain. These things were unreal. They were probably fried five times in lard, but that lard was delicious. Everything about these potatoes were delicious. Oh, how I miss these potatoes.

There were soooooo crispy.

Anyway, while I reminisce, you can plan your National Potato Day celebration. The good news is, you can get potatoes a lot of places at Happy Hour, though they typically come in the form of French Fries. So, here are a handful of places with potato variations on their Happy Hour menus, starting with Lazy Dog where the Sweet Potato Tots are super tasty and the aioli they serve with them is even better.

Satisfied with fries, or going tater-free? Check out our list of Monday Happy Hours in the area.

Did You Know? 🧠

Your brain burns a lot of calories in a day.

And the harder you think, the more calories it burns.

Even when you're just sitting there, contemplating the mysteries of the universe - or what to have for lunch - your brain takes a lot of energy to run. In fact, though it makes up only about 2% of your body weight, your brain uses about 20% of your body's energy. That's a pretty big slice of the energy pie for such a small organ. Most of the energy your brain consumes goes towards maintaining basic brain functions, like keeping your heart beating, your lungs breathing, and ensuring that you don't forget your own name. And it uses this energy no matter what, whether you’re running a marathon or utterly zoned out in front of the TV.

But here’s where it gets interesting. When you really put your brain to work - whether you’re solving a tricky problem, writing an important email, or just trying to remember where you left your keys - it’s like HIIT for your brain. It’s starts churning at higher-intensity, and burns even more calories.

So, just how much more brain-burn can you get with some mental gymnastics? About 5%, which doesn’t add up to much. If you’re brain burns 300 calories per day, that extra thinking only burns about 15 calories.

And it gets worse.

Studies have shown that the reason your brain burns extra calories when thinking hard is due to stress, and that people who put their brains to intensive work right before a meal eat MORE than those who don’t. Basically, thinking hard makes you want to stress eat. And your brain can’t burn enough calories to compensate for that.

AROUND THE VALLEY 📍

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Calling All Talented Seniors! 📢

Are you a senior with a wicked cool talent the city deserves to see? Registration packets to audition for Senior Idol are due by Friday. Auditions take place September 3-5 by appointment at East Las Vegas Community Center, and the variety show takes place October 3rd at Charleston Heights Arts Center. You have to be ages 50+ to audition.

New Elevators for the Airport 🛗

They’re adding new elevators at Harry Reid International Airport, and refurbing existing ones, thanks to a grant from the Infrastructure Law Airport Infrastructure Grants program. All of the work will be done in Terminal 1 (the domestic terminal) and begins next month, so be prepared for a little inconvenience if you’re flying domestically over the next two years. But also be prepared for some nice, modernized elevators. Here’s hoping for some air conditioning in the ones in the parking garage!
