Did You Know? 🔥

Only 6 people died in the Great Fire of London. Officially, at least.

Of course, there's never an "only" when we're talking about people dying in a disaster, but it's a truly amazing number when considering the year and the scale of the fire.

The great fire broke out on September 2, 1666, in a bakery on Pudding Lane. Now, fires in bakeries weren't exactly rare back then, but this one had the worst possible conditions: strong winds and a city full of highly flammable buildings. London in 1666 was practically built out of kindling - its narrow streets lined with wooden houses, many of which were coated in tar for waterproofing. (Not so fun fact: tar is very flammable.) Combine that with thatched roofs and wooden beams, and you've got a city ready to go up in flames faster than you can say "fire bucket."

Over the course of three days, the fire blazed across London, consuming 13,200 homes, 87 churches, and numerous other buildings, including the original St. Paul's Cathedral. By the time the flames were finally extinguished on September 6, they had consumed nearly four-fifths of the city, leaving 100,000 people homeless. While that might sound like a relatively small percentage of London’s population today, at the time it meant almost everyone in the city was displaced by the fire. And yet, according to official records, only six people lost their lives.

Now, six is a pretty shockingly low number considering the destruction. And it’s highly likely it’s not entirely accurate. Record-keeping hadn’t exactly hit its prime in 1666, and many deaths, particularly those of the poor, likely went unrecorded.

Still, when weighed against a city 80% destroyed and practically an entire population displaced, six recorded deaths is a miraculously low figure.

So, just how did so many people manage to escape unharmed? Oddly enough, it may have had a lot to do with the plague. The year before, an outbreak of plague swept through the city, and historians believe that very outbreak might have had many Londoners on edge and more alert than usual. Basically, residents were ready to flee the city at a moment’s notice, so when the fire came, they put their quick-getaway plans into action.

It’s weird to think that a plague that cost millions of lives around the world might have had any good result, but in a bizarre twist, it’s just possible it gave Londoners the head start they needed when the great fire came blazing through. After all, if you've already prepared for one catastrophe, you're better at packing up and making a quick exit when the next one comes around.

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

A Las Vegas Area Newspaper 📰

Hey! We got mentioned by a Las Vegas Area newspaper! Well, kind of. Pretty sure this - Summerlin neighborhood newsletter - is about us, since the rest of the article was talking about Public School 702 closing. So, thanks to the readers who alerted us to this news, so that we could, in turn, alert a local newspaper.

While we’re very happy to share information, and we try to be as accurate as we can with what we present to you, I’m not sure the pros should be getting their scoops from us…

‘Cause, let’s be real, most of the time this newsletter is just pure silliness.
