TODAYā€™S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Tuesday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Last Tuesday, we told you about the Nevada SPCA annual pet calendar contest, and youā€™ve still got a few days left to enter your supermodel pet. But now the SPCA have sweetened the deal. For your $20 entry fee, your pet will be included in a collage page in the calendar AND youā€™ll get a calendar for free. So, if you havenā€™t entered yet, you have until Friday.

In other news, Nevada ranks #12 in road rage, according to a report by ConsumerAffairs. I know what youā€™re thinking - ā€œNo way! That couldnā€™t possibly include this city thatā€™s so lovely to drive in and where I never see people acting crazy on the road.ā€ My first thought was, ā€œIā€™m surprised weā€™re so low, to be honest.ā€ Must be the rural areas keeping us in check.

Also, itā€™s Making Life Beautiful Day, so if you feel like it, do something that adds some beauty to the world. Hold open a door. Plant a flower. Try not to run anyone off the road.

TODAYā€™S HAPPY HOURS

There are a few singles events meeting up at area restaurants tonight, wisely over Happy Hour, so weā€™re going to those places too. Hereā€™s where you might be able to hook up a little friendly conversation with your discount drink tonight.

Did You Know? šŸ¢

Desert tortoises can give birth for up to 15 years after initial mating.

And, yes, that means exactly what it sounds like. Female desert tortoises can store viable sperm from a single mating session for years, releasing it gradually to fertilize eggs over time. That means, any time years after mating, a female desert tortoise can become pregnant and give birth. And theyā€™re not the only species that does this. Some sharks and snakes do it too, including the rattlesnake.

As horrifying as this prospect might sound to many of us - talk about delayed delivery! - for desert tortoises this evolutionary marvel is a literal lifesaver. In the harsh, unpredictable environments of deserts, the ability to produce offspring over many years increases the chances of species survival, even if mates are scarce and conditions are tough. It's kind of like nature's way of saying, "Why put all your eggs in one basket when you can literally spread them out over 15 years?"

TODAYā€™S RESTAURANT SPECIALS

If itā€™s Tuesday, itā€™s tacos. At least, thatā€™s where the deals are. Hereā€™s where you can get your taco fix at a discount tonight.

Or, if itā€™s a burger youā€™re feeling, you can get one for $7 tonight at John Cutter.

Got a vacation coming up? Donā€™t forget travel insurance! Itā€™s cheap and the peace of mind you need. Plus, travel is already stressful enough!

LOCAL EVENTS TO CHECK OUT

Feeling a bit lackluster today, and think getting out of the house might help? Or maybe youā€™re feeling super-lustery, and want to make life beautiful by gracing the world with your presence?

Either way, there are a lot of places to shine (or sit in the corner) tonight, including indoors where the air conditioning is.

*For outdoor events, be sure to check their pages closer to event time. Some events may cancel due to the excessive heat.

Also, donā€™t forget about the Sports & Entertainment Career Fair earlier in the day tomorrow (1-3 pm), if thatā€™s of interest to you.

And, also tomorrow, the City of Las Vegas Department of Neighborhood Services will have representatives at Sahara West Library for a Q&A from 1-3 pm, so if you have any questions about services, how to report issues, or how to reach the right city department, you might want to clear some time in your schedule for that.
