Did You Know? 🌊
Manatees use their own personal gas supply to control their position in the water.
In indelicate terms, they fart (or don't fart) to regulate their buoyancy.
Here's how this remarkable flotation system works:
When manatees want to stay buoyant and rise closer to the surface of the water, they hold gas in. This helps them float effortlessly, because gas is less dense than water, and the more gas something has in its body, the more buoyant it is.
Conversely, when a manatee wants to sink to graze on those delicious underwater plants, it... well... lets a little air out of the tank. By releasing gas (presumably in a hilarious, bubbly spectacle), manatees decrease their buoyancy, allowing them to sink or dive deeper.
It's all part of the manatees' incredible adaptation to their aquatic lifestyles. Unlike fish, which have specialized organs called swim bladders to manage their buoyancy, manatees have to rely on their regular stomachs and digestive systems. Fortunately, their veg-heavy diets mean plenty of fiber, which creates plenty of gas for them to use.
Now, if you're thinking I sure wish I could float better when bloated, you should know that you technically do. When your body is holding extra gas, it can increase your overall buoyancy in water. While the effect is very minor compared to other factors that affect human buoyancy, like body fat percentage, muscle mass, and lung capacity (holding your breath has a much bigger effect on your ability to float than any post-meal bloating!), it's still there. Something you might want to remember the next time you're going for a lazy back float down river.
AROUND THE VALLEY đź“Ť
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
Free Pickleball, Y’all 🏓
If you’re hankering to watch the pickleball pros shoot it out, get your free tickets now. The PPA Las Vegas Open takes place at the Darling Tennis Center (Kellogg Zaher Sports Complex - 7901 W Washington Ave) on Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11, with semifinals and finals on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13. Free courtside tickets are available for the mens and womens singles on Thursdays and the mixed doubles on Friday. So, if you want to get your pickle on, get those tickets reserved.
And don’t forget, we’ve got a list of where you can play pickleball in Summerlin.
It’s Gettin’ Smoky Up in Here 💨
Ah, the pleasures of Western living. If you start coughing for no apparent reason today, it’s probably the smoke from three - yes, three! - wildfires currently burning out of control outside of Los Angeles. (There’s also a wildfire in Washoe County, but Northern Nevada and Utah are getting their business.) The windy-wind is bringing it in. So, keep your homes well-insulated, your air purifiers well-filtered, and take care when breathing.
