Did You Know? 🕊️

Live doves were released as part of the Olympic Games opening ceremonies from 1920 through 1988, when a very unfortunate tragedy discontinued the peaceful tradition.

Be forewarned - this one gets a little disturbing.

The releasing of live doves, a symbol of peace and hope, at the Olympics began at the Antwerp Games in 1920. Taking place just a year and a half after the end of World War I, each dove was released by a soldier representing the delegations of the competing nation, a poignant reminder of the desire for global harmony following the war.

The tradition continued year after year, with each Olympic games seeing doves soaring gracefully into the sky, a peaceful and harmonious start to the international event.

But in 1988, at the Seoul Olympics, this beautiful tradition met a rather untimely end in a rather dramatic fashion. During the opening ceremony, the doves were released just before the Olympic cauldron was lit, as per tradition. But instead of flying up and away, the doves went all over, some of them landing to perch on the rim of the Olympic cauldron. (You might see where this is going…)

When the torchbearer ran in with the Olympic torch and ignited the cauldron’s flame, some of the doves caught fire, not just in front of the live crowd, but in a macabre spectacle broadcasted to millions worldwide. This led to the International Olympic Committee putting the kibosh on the use of live animals in most ceremonies.

But while doves have been removed from the Olympics for their own safety, the idea of them remains. Over the years, they’ve been represented by everything from images and animations to symbolic bike rides and dances. So, basically, same spirit without the unintended barbecue, which is a win-win for everyone… especially the doves.

AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE)📍

Here are some things Around the Valley (and the Olympics) we think might be of interest -

This Surfer’s Flyin’

Did you see this super cool photo from Olympics Surfing? Photographer Jerome Brouillet captured the impossible shot. As a lover of photography and a strong liker of surfing (to watch, not to do), I find it cool as heck.

Like Beer?

Specifically gently-spiced Belgian witbier? If so, you may want to head to Triple 7 in Downtown Vegas. Their brewmaster, Casey Jacobson, led them to the gold medal in the Belgian Witbier category at the U.S. Open Beer Championship.
