TODAY’S WIND DOWN PRESENTED BY

Happy Tuesday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Welp, just like that, Christmas is just over a week away. And we have family coming in on Monday. That means cleaning all those little things I never clean, like the stair railing. I mean, why would I? It just gets dusty again in two days. And the dust here really doesn’t play, does it?

If you’re looking for something to do that lets you forget about the impending holidays for just a moment, there are still plenty of things to do this week, including giving up some of that precious blood to the American Red Cross until 3 pm today!

In today's 702 West City Wind Down:

  • Did You Know? 🥚

  • Around the Valley 🏎️🏈

  • Tuesday-Thursday Events & Live Music 🎨🎶

Did You Know? 🥚

Eggnog is derived from a British drink called posset.

Well… probably.

The truth is, historians don't entirely agree on the origin story of eggnog, because in the 13th century nobody was keeping very good notes on holiday beverages. But one thing's for sure: posset and eggnog are close enough to be cousins. The kind of cousins who both show up to the party, spike the punch, and fall asleep in a corner by dessert.

For the uninitiated, posset was a hot, creamy, boozy concoction enjoyed by the Brits in the Middle Ages. It was a mix of warm milk, ale or wine, and sometimes spices. And while it was used to warm frosty souls on cold nights, posset was also believed to have medicinal properties. Got a fever? Have a posset. Need help sleeping? Have a posset. Want to survive the fact that medieval plumbing was nonexistent? Yep, posset time. Basically, it was the medieval version of a hot toddy.

Jump ahead a few centuries, and as the Brits traveled and - let’s be blunt - colonized the world, they brought their fondness for boozy cream drinks with them. When posset hit the colonies, a couple of key changes occurred. First, the wine and ale were swapped out for rum, a cheaper, more available spirit, thanks to trade in the Americas. Second, enter the egg. Colonists had no shortage of chickens and, therefore, no shortage of eggs to thicken things up and make the drink a bit heartier. Throw in a bit of sugar and nutmeg (luxuries back then, but staples now), and voilà - egg-noggin' was born. And, yes, "noggin" was an old word for a small cup, so the name kind of came together naturally.

With its warm, rich, and boozy combination, by the 18th century eggnog became a holiday staple. It's even rumored that George Washington himself loved eggnog so much he had his own recipe, which (shocker) included enough booze to knock out a grown moose.

Today, whether you drink it spiked, non-alcoholic, or don’t drink it at all, eggnog is a festive tradition with roots in history, creamy comfort, and enough sugar to keep Santa fueled all night long. While posset as a drink has kind of faded in popularity, we’ll always have it to thank for today’s noggy goodness.

Around the Valley 🏎️🏈

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

What Goes Up… 🏎️

…continues to be an annoyance to Strip-area commuters.

The ugly F1 Flamingo bridge is finally being taken down this week. Just so they can erect it again in about ten months.

The dismantling started on Sunday and will continue through Saturday, December 21st. That’s a full week to bring it back down.

Which I suppose is because they’re being careful?

‘Cause I really think if they just handed some of those commuters sledgehammers and energy drinks, the whole thing could be done in a couple of hours.

Do You Want Tom Brady Picking Your Quarterback? 🏈

Tom Brady is the winningest quarterback in NFL history, and a minority owner of the Raiders.

He’s also a cheater-cheater-pumpkin-eater.

But, unsurprisingly, since he IS the winningest quarterback in NFL history, the Raiders are leaning on him to pick their new quarterback.

In honor of this decision, I thought we should consider the pros and cons of what Brady’s participation might mean:

Pros

  • QB will probably be pretty good

  • QB might come with a supermodel… at least temporarily

  • Raiders postseason chances will probably increase five-fold (I mean, not this year… but maybe next)

Cons

  • QB might not want to play in a dumbed-down league

  • Items that require air, like balloons and bouncy houses, within a mile radius of Allegiant Stadium might be deflated
