more extreme heat on the way this weekend đ„”
Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Are you ready for a load of additional neighbors? If not, youâd better get ready. A new residential development has been proposed (and the zoning approved) somewhere down around Mesa Ridge. đ The development could contain as many as 400 homes, so neighbors in the Mesa Ridge area, get ready for construction in the near-ish future.
In right-now news, the temperature is ticking up again over the weekend. đ„” If you need somewhere to go to escape the heat, the cityâs Cooling Stations will be open again from Friday through Sunday.

Staying In? Check Out These Awesome Things đ
Let's get to it. See you on the other side.
But first up, a quick note from our sponsorâŠ
Ever Wondered Why Your Gym Clothes Never Smell 100% Clean?
Itâs because activewear uses tightly woven synthetic fabrics to wick away sweat while you workout.
Unfortunately, traditional detergents use fabric softeners that can coat over sweat, dead skin, & bacteria trapping them inside these fabrics.
So once your body starts heating up⊠the smell inevitably returns.
ACTIVE solves this by using a scientifically formulated, all natural enzyme blend to break down these trapped contaminants once and for all!
Finally a solution to your smelly Activewear!
TODAYâS HAPPY HOURS & EATS đ¶
If youâd like to help puppers, kit-cats, and more with your dining out, Slaterâs 50/50 is the place you want to be. A portion of sales go to the Southern Nevada Animal Rescue League if you eat there at any time today (Happy Hour included!).
|
Itâs also National Caviar Day, and there are exactly two places we know of where you can get caviar at Happy Hour.
First up, at Fine Company, they serve Caviar Fries on their Happy Hour menu. I havenât had them myself, but itâs the buttermilk dip thatâs caviar-topped.
And, next, at HarlĂ Steakhouse, our Lobster Toast (which they originally called the Lobster Roll) came out gently caviar-topped.

Plants love their sibs.
Well, maybe love is putting it a bit strongly, but they do recognize their siblings from the same mother plant and show them greater consideration.
Here's the dirt: research has shown that plants can differentiate between siblings and unrelated plants. And when growing next to their siblings, they tend to be less competitive. Instead of aggressively vying for resources - you know stuff like sunlight, water, and nutrients - sibling plants will often engage in cooperative behavior, making it more likely for each of them to grow and thrive.
So, just how did scientists discover this quirky familial plant love?
From plant root systems.
When plants were grown alongside their siblings, their roots stretched out in a less competitive manner, intertwining gently rather than battling for space. (Though, that might be hard to believe for those of us who shared the backseat with our own siblings on long road trips.)
This sharing behavior has practical benefits. By being less aggressive with their sibs, plants create a more stable and supportive environment. This often leads to more robust growth and better survival rates for the entire family. Something you might want to remember the next time youâre squabbling with your sibling over who gets the bigger slice of cake.

Oh, Covid. Will You Ever Just Become the Common Cold? đ€
Suffering some light or moderate sniffles? Or some major sniffles? Fatigue? Muscle aches? Tummy troubles? It could be Covid⊠again. Nevada is one of seven states with âvery highâ levels of Covid in our wastewater. And high levels of Covid in wastewater means high levels of Covid out walking about. So, you know, take heed when out in public.
Good Furballs in Need of Good Homes đ±
The Animal Foundation cannot stop being overrun with cute things. They are officially out of kennels for dogs, and are in desperate need of forever (or foster) homes for their four-leggers.
So, if youâve got a good space and time and energy for walks, the animals (and Animal Foundation) could use your help. No appointment is required and all adoption fees are currently waived.
If you donât have the right space and time, you can still help out. The Animal Foundation is also accepting donations of gently-used crates, collars, leashes and more.
