TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 😒

Well, last night was True Food Kitchen’s Fall Tasting. And it was… interesting. It started out great, like really great. Complimentary cava, you say? Yes, please. But was it a peace offering in advance? It very well might have been.

Next, came the appetizers, also delightful. I was all in on the Sourdough Focaccia and the Chinese Chicken Salad. The Nashville Hot Slider came out like it had just crossed the tundra to get to us, but the flavor was good even in ice-cold form.

Then, things got real - real surprising.

It all started when I spotted the “margarita flights” going around. I put “margarita flights” in quotes because, while, admittedly, a flight can be uncertain if the amounts aren’t disclosed, I think there is a bare minimum we all expect when we read “margarita flight.” And those “margaritas” coming out in half-full shot glasses ain’t it.

So, at this point, I was already kinda thinking, “Well, maybe this wasn’t quite the good deal I thought it was.”

Then, the bomb dropped, Y’all. There had been a “miscommunication” and the margarita flights were one per table. That’s right, three thimbles per table.

Now, in the spirit of fairness and the possibility that there was an actual miscommunication here, I offer the visual evidence of last night’s menu -

This menu was at each place setting when we arrived. At each place setting.

Here’s the photo from that same page (you know, in case the page disappears) -

Hmmm. What a strangely normal-sized margarita flight…

And, in case you’re wondering, we weren’t the only ones surprised by events. The vibe in that room went from hungry to prickly in a single round of margarita thimbles.

The point of all this is, if you were at the TFK tasting last night and you found out about it here, I greatly apologize. And the next time I tell you about one of these prix-fixes that seem like too good a deal to be true, PLEASE REMIND ME NOT TO GO.

Did You Know? 👸🏾

Cleopatra - one of the most famous names in ancient Egyptian history - wasn't actually Egyptian at all.

Despite being practically synonymous with Egypt itself, Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek by descent. She was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a line of Greeks who took control of Egypt after Alexander the Great's empire was divvied up following his death.

Before Cleopatra, the Ptolemies held onto their Greek identity like toddlers hold onto their favorite stuffed animals. For nearly 300 years, they spoke Greek, practiced Greek customs, and kept largely to themselves.

But Cleopatra was different. She may not have been Egyptian by birth, but she embraced Egyptian culture. She was the first in her dynasty to actually learn the Egyptian language - yes, the first in 300 years - and she adopted Egyptian customs, earning her some serious Egyptian street cred and a deeper connection to the population than her predecessors. She ruled Egypt as if it were in her blood-- even though it wasn't, and even styled herself as the reincarnation of Isis, the Egyptian goddess of motherhood and fertility.

Basically, Cleo knew how to work the crowd.

So, while Cleopatra may have worn the crown of Egypt and her image may be forever linked with pyramids and pharaohs, her roots were firmly planted in Macedonian soil. It was a classic case of "when in Rome" - well, Egypt - and a smart political strategy that helped her cement her legacy as one of the most famous figures in ancient history.

AROUND THE VALLEY 📍

Here’s something Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Fall Into the Bellagio 🍁

Love the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens as much as I do? (It’s honestly one of the few things I’ll brave The Strip for.) If so, it’s time for another trip. The autumn display, “The Garden of Time,” is up and enchanting. It will be on display through November 9th.
