Did You Know? 🕷️

Spiders have clear blood.

Creepy-Crawly Water Balloon

You might have noticed if you've ever given a spider a good squish (either by accident or because they're the spawns of Satan), but when spiders go splat, they do so in pretty clear fashion.

That's because spiders don't get their oxygen the same way we do, so their blood is a whole different beast. Well...bug.

Where humans have hemoglobin, which uses iron for transport and gives our blood its gorgeous crimson hue, spiders have hemolymph, which uses copper for transport and is completely clear when unoxygenated.

Now, while hemolymph can take on a blue-green tint when it IS oxygenated, when a spider gets splatted, there really isn't much time for oxygenation. So, unless that spider just came from a yoga retreat where it was doing some deep breathing, you're likely to see a clear splat instead of a blue or green-tinged one.

Also, unlike us humans, who keep our blood neatly tucked away in veins and arteries, spiders' blood runs wild, flowing freely throughout their body cavities. Because, they're spiders, so of course it does. What else would they be if not horrifying pincer-y blood baskets?

So, while spiders might seem like they’re all legs and nightmares, they're basically creepy-crawly water balloons - well, clear blood balloons. Which somehow maybe makes them even more creepy?

If you’re the arty sort who likes to take things around your house and make other things with them, the City of Las Vegas has just the contest for you. The 2nd Annual Recycled Art Contest and Art Showcase is coming up. If you’d like to submit a recycled masterpiece, you can do it through October 13th (that’s Sunday, if you don’t have a calendar at hand) and the showcase takes place on November 16th at Las Vegas City Hall.

So, stop tossing those wine bottles and toilet paper rolls and start brainstorming.

Want to Watch the Tropicana Implode? đź’Ą

If so, you’ll have to be really dedicated.

The demolition is scheduled for 2:30 a.m. tomorrow (aka very late tonight), and a perimeter has been set up for the safety of would-be looky-loos. While the Las Vegas Review-Journal suggests a few spots where you might be able to catch a glimpse of the hotel going down, I imagine those are going to be pretty crowded and elbow-y.

But there is a fireworks and drone show before the implosion, and you’ll probably be able to see that from somewhere on The Strip. You know, if you feel compelled.
