TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS (FEATURING NACHOS) 🍷

In our final installment of weird food items on Happy Hour menus, we’re featuring nachos - one offering that sounds absolutely unappealing and the other that best live up to its name.

First up, at La Neta Cocina, they serve up Trash Nachos, which sounds like something my brother might have whipped up and tried to make me eat as a kid. But, really, they’re just chips with fundido, esquite, pico and guac, which doesn’t sound at all trash-like to me. (In fact, they sound pretty darn good.)

Meanwhile, at Aces and Ales, you can get Nacho Average Nachos, which is a heckuva name to live up to. Topped with black beans, red sauce, melted jack & cheddar cheeses, pico, jalapeños & sour cream, they sound pretty average, but the chips are freshly-cooked, so maybe they elevate things?

But let’s be real - they’re nachos - they’re both probably delicious.

  • La Neta Cocina y Lounge

  • Downtown Summerlin

  • 3-6 pm

  • Aces and Ales

  • Summerlin North

  • 4-6 pm

Not in the mood for nachos? Check out our full list of Monday Happy Hours.

Did You Know? 🦫

There’s a beaver dam so big it can be seen from space.

Last week, I promised you a creature-made, but non-human-made structure that can be seen from space, and that animal architectural marvel comes to us courtesy of the industrious beavers.

Located in the wilds of Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada, this massive dam stretches an astounding 850 meters, or about 2,790 feet. To put that into perspective, that's nearly three times the length of the Empire State Building laid flat.

The dam was first spotted by researcher Jean Thie in 2007 while he was studying satellite images. At first, the spot on the images was a big question mark - like, what on earth is that? But it was soon discovered the visible horseshoe shape in the Peace-Athabasca Delta was, in fact, a great beaver metropolis.

You might know beavers build dams to create deep pools of water for protection against predators and easy access to food and building materials, but those dams are typically small villages and they may only last a season.

The dam in Wood Buffalo National Park takes beaver construction to a whole new level. To reach the magnitude of the dam that now exists, it had to be constructed over decades by multiple generations of beavers. Talk about giving your all to the ancestral estate!

AROUND THE VALLEY 🚙

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Mimi Extends 🎤

Been wanting to get in on The Celebration of Mimi? If so, you’ve got some additional time to do it. Mariah Carey has added eight dates to her residency at the Park MGM. The dates are between January 31st and February 15th, and tickets go on sale on Friday.

The Raiders Have Reported For Duty 🏈

In another sign that fall (or at least slightly-less-hot-summer) will one day come again, the Raiders have started training camp. They train in Costa Mesa, California, because literally no one should be wearing pads and helmets in these temps. Rookies clocked in yesterday, and vets clock in tomorrow.

The Raiders will play their first game of the season on September 8th on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
