đč Mojitos, New Coffee Shop, Albertsons Closing & More
and your chance at $1.6 million from The Mirage
TODAYâS WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!
The coffee IS coming, but is the Albertsons going?
The coffee shop thatâs been tempting us in Trails Village Center ever since the Starbucks shuttered in the same corner location last year is, oddly enough, still on the way. â Foxtail Coffee Co. remains in the works, which seems a rather lengthy process for turning a coffee shop into a coffee shop, but hopefully, when allâs said and done, there will be a nice coffee spot there once again.
Meanwhile, in grocery news, your Albertsons may become a Smithâs (presumably). If the courts allow it, Kroger plans to buy up more than a dozen Albertsons and Vons stores in Las Vegas, including the Albertsons in Trails Village Center and Center Pointe Plaza. While their intentions for these stores is unknown (though, they have said they donât plan to close any of them), theyâll likely convert to Smithâs, which already has a strong presence here and Kroger already owns. Hopefully, those sweet Chobani deals will convert with them.

TODAYâS HAPPY HOURS & EATS đč
Well, itâs National Mojito Day, so if youâre feeling a bit of a cool off with mint and lime (or maybe another flavor), youâve got some options, including a couple of places that specifically list mojitos on their Happy Hour menus.
First up, at True Food Kitchen, the Peach Mojito is one of our Happy Hour highlights. It truly is sublime. But youâve got more options at Kona Grill, where you can get a traditional, raspberry or sparkling sake mojito with your Happy Hour.

But donât feel constrained to these spots. A mojito IS a well drink most bartenders will make.

Did You Know? đ
Floriography, or the language of flowers, is so old, it predates written history.
This practice has been a silent, expressive means of communication for countless civilizations, each of which added their own layer of meaning to our floral lexicon.
In ancient times, the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese all assigned symbolic meanings to flowers. But these meanings werenât just about impressing your date or making Mom smile on her birthday. Flowers, and their assigned meanings, were important parts of rituals, ceremonies, and everyday life, expressing concepts such as love, purity, and mourning.
In this way, flowers became an essential part of the social and religious fabric of the ancient world, all over the world.
But while flowers have carried great significance for a very long time, their role as clandestine messengers truly blossomed in Turkey with the practice of "selam." This intricate method of message-sending involved choosing flowers very carefully and arranging them in a particular way to convey a secret message - sort of a Morse code of flowers.
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, an English writer who lived in Turkey in the early 18th century, found the custom fascinating and documented it in her letters back to England, which sparked interest in flower-language in Europe.
By the late-1700s, the French were publishing floral dictionaries with detailed symbolic meanings of flowers. But it was the Victorians who to floriography to new heights. During this stuffy age when direct expression of feelings was poo-pooed, the language of flowers provided a discreet way to emote. A person couldnât tell someone they had the hots for them openly, but they could certainly hand them a red rose.
From the confines of their corsets, the Victorians became adept at this floral code, using it to navigate the social norms of their time. Itâs because of them that we still equate red roses with passion, yellow roses with friendship, and white roses with purity.
AROUND THE VALLEY đ°
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
It Might Be Worth a Gamble đ°
Are you gambler? If so, youâre going to want to brave The Strip and do your gambling this weekend at The Mirage.
You probably already know The Mirage casino is closing for good on July 17th after 35 years in business, but did you know, before they do, they have $1.6 million in winnings they have to legally give away?
In order to give away that money, The Mirage is holding drawings every Âœ hour from 3-7 pm today through Sunday (and again next Tuesday), but you canât enter from afar. You have to be there physically playing the slots to enter.
It Really IS That Hot đ«
You might have noticed itâs hot outside. Which you likely expect here in the desert. But it really is THAT hot outside. As of yesterday, The Valley has broken 16 records for high temps just this year. What do you think? Will today be 17? My guess is yes.
