Did You Know? 🌞

While Midsummer does honor the summer solstice (which typically falls a few days before), historically it marked the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between the toil of planting and the reap of the harvest.

Don’t worry, we know it’s hot here. Circling a fire is optional.

In many ancient cultures, particularly those of Europe, Midsummer was recognized as one of the four "Quarter Days." These days divided the year into, you guessed it, quarters and were essential for organizing agricultural activities and community events.

During Midsummer, crops are in a critical phase of development. Seeds sown in the spring have sprouted and are reaching fruition. Farmers used this midpoint (and still do) to assess the health and progress of their crops, checking for signs of adequate growth, potential pest infestations, or disease. Basically, it was a good time to make sure all that hard work and effort wasn’t going to get done in by the whims of nature. Or, you know, an elf.

So, while today, Midsummer might look like one big holiday (and it is, neck-and-neck with Christmas in Sweden), it is actually an essential time to check your crops and ensure your feast will last throughout the year.
