higher than normal temps...again

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Ready for some relief from the extreme July heat? đŸ„” Well, tough nuggets apparently. Forecasters say we can expect the temps in the first half of August to be higher than normal too. I guess that means we’ll be waiting a little longer to truly enjoy our outdoor spaces and patio dining options.

Speaking of outdoor spaces, have you ever wondered how many parks and other communal outdoor spots Summerlin has? It’s over 300. While not all of those spots are accessible to everyone, a lot of them are. So, you know, if this heat furnace of a summer ever decides to become a more casual summer, you’ve got lots of options for outdoor hangin’.

Also, congrats to Lorrie Bamford, winner of our July members giveaway - a Makers & Finders gift card. (Might I highly suggest the Mexican Spiced Latte?)

Did You Know? 🍎

While olive branches might be the most famous plant prize associated with the Olympics, the ancient games were more like a botanical bonanza. At least, for the winners.

Those iconic olive wreaths, or kotinos, that were given to victors as a symbol of peace and victory were far from the only leafy accolades in town. Ancient Olympians who came in top of their event were also given date palm branches, because palm trees were symbols of endurance and resilience in ancient cultures - the kind of endurance and resilience it took to become an Olympic Champion.

But there's more! Along with their palm branches (which were basically stand-ins for scepters) and olive wreath crowns, victors were adorned with aromatic garlands of myrtle and laurel. And while both smelled pretty darn good, myrtle and laurel were also highly prized for their symbolism. Laurel wreaths, in particular, were markers of fame and honor, while Myrtle was associated with love and immortality, neither of which an Olympic win could guarantee, though, let’s be honest, being a champion probably did make it a little easier to find a date.

And, finally, adding a tasty twist to this fete of flora, Olympic victors were also presented with an apple. In ancient Greek culture, apples were associated with beauty and wisdom. So, after a hard-fought victory, an athlete could bite into that juicy apple, knowing it symbolized their exceptional qualities. Which was good, because by this point they probably also really needed a snack.

AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE) đŸș

Here are some things Around the Valley (and the Olympics!) we think might be of interest -

How Inspiring is This Biz? đŸ”«

Can you imagine what it must be like to work your butt off your whole life for a chance to compete in the Olympics only to have something go tragically wrong at the worst possible moment? That’s kind of what happened to Adriana Ruano back in 2011 when she was only 16 years old. Ruano was training to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics when she experienced a career-ending injury to her back. Since she could no longer do gymnastics, her doctor recommended she take up shooting. Cause why not? Practically the same thing, right? đŸ€” But apparently it wasn’t such terrible advice. Yesterday, Ruano took gold in Women’s Trap Shooting, which was the first gold medal EVER for Guatemala. So, good on you Doc for coming in with the strangely solid advice that somehow elevated both a patient and a nation.

(Keep an eye on this one. I think it’s definitely a contender for feel-good story of the Olympics.)

A Free Ale on the Mobsters đŸș

Ever thought about going to the Mob Museum, but need a little more incentive to sweeten the deal? How about a free Big Al Ale with your museum admission? For the entire month of August, locals - yup, you gotta whip that ID out again - can get a free ale in the museum’s Underground with museum admission. And locals already get a pretty sweet discount at the Mob Museum ($19.95 compared to $34.95 for out-of-staters), so, you know, twenty bucks for an exhibit walkthrough and a brewski
or should that be an aleski?
 not too shabby.
