Did You Know? 🧐

Ancient Olympians competed in the nude.

But, while it certainly beat the clothing of the day, it may not have been the most aerodynamic way to do it.

Back in the days of draped clothing with barely any hems or tucks, athletes competing in the Olympic games would strip down to the buff, believing that running and wrestling sans clothes would give them an edge. And, at the time, they were right. Nudity certainly did top the cumbersome common clothing of the times when it came to maneuverability.

But times have changed, and so have fabrics and designs. It turns out that the high-tech, fitted clothing worn by modern Olympians can actually enhance performance. In fact, modern athletic wear is specifically engineered to make athletes more aerodynamic, reducing drag in both air and water.

Case in point - swimmers. Those sleek suits Olympic swimmers sport are designed to mimic the texture of shark skin, reducing friction and allowing swimmers to glide more efficiently through the water. And the better the suit is made, the better the result. Even the tiniest reduction in drag can be the difference between a gold and a silver.

But swimmers aren’t the only Olympic athletes to benefit from modern clothing tech. Runners, cyclists, and jumpers also benefit from advancements in sportswear. And these garments don’t just make athletes more aerodynamic, they support the body - reducing muscle vibration and fatigue and improving endurance and recovery times.

So, while the ancient Greeks were onto something with their minimalist approach, their nakedness would be hard-pressed to compete with the sleek sportswear of today’s Olympians. Unless, of course, it was through the element of surprise.

That said, when it comes to sleek, modern sportswear, fit matters a lot. If everything isn’t sucked and tucked just right, the sportswear can’t get the job done. Just ask pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati of France, who probably wished he’d worn some different underwear on Saturday. (But more on that below 😉)

Rest In Peace, Ozzie 🦒

Generally, I try to keep the news here light, but we have to say goodbye to Ozzie, the Giraffe of the Lion Habitat Ranch. Ozzie took a fall on Friday and died as a result of his injuries. So, with great sadness, we say Goodbye, Ozzie. We know you’ll stand tall over that great savannah in the sky.
