TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Well, it’s the first day of summer and the longest day of the year.

I suppose that means there’s time for us to get a lot done today. Or to take a daytime nap. A daytime nap sounds pretty good actually…

But if you are awake, there’s an American Red Cross blood drive at Sahara West Library until 4 pm, so if you’ve got a universal blood type, you’re full-up on blood at the moment, and you have nothing to do between now and 4 pm, you know where you can get your poke. 🧛

Don’t forget to pop in and see the latest gallery exhibits while you’re there (just released last week).

Also, if you’re worried about the Whole Foods-sized hole that will be opening in the Boca Park area at the end of the year, you might be excited to know another grocery store may be moving in… to the area… not to the exact location. But right across the street, in Boca Park proper.

99 Ranch Market is looking to move into an empty storefront (the big one just a couple of doors down from Petland), so worry not for your grocery selection.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS 🍷

Since it is the first day of summer and the humidity has been low (seriously, we left the house last night and I’m still not sure I’ve rehydrated), I’m dubbing this Summer Solstice “Thirsty Thursday.” Which, despite the name, is not in fact a new dating app, but how I think many of you might be feeling at your Happy Hours tonight.

So, we’re talking places with pitchers on their Happy Hour menus - namely pitchers of Sangria, which is about at “summer wine” as wine can get - and we’re putting them in order from least to most expensive.

Prefer your pitchers to contain beer? Al’s Garage serves up $16 draft pitchers at Happy Hour.

Did You Know? 🧐

Desert globemallow is not-so-affectionately known as pink-eye poppies.

Officially called Sphaeralcea ambigua, desert globemallows are not just pretty faces in the desert. They bloom in abundance after desert rains, transforming vast stretches of sand into a sea of orange. These hardy plants are also a hit in landscaping for their drought tolerance and their ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. They've even got medicinal street cred - Native American tribes have used parts of the desert globemallow to treat a variety of ailments.

But while these resilient plants add a splash of color to the desert landscape, don't let their delicate appearance fool you - they are out to irritate the heck out of you.

Those disarming flowers that tempt you closer for a sniff are covered in tiny, star-shaped hairs on their leaves and stems. The hairs look harmless, but they are ocular ninja stars. Get too close or stand downwind, and these hairs can catch air and end up in your eyes, where they create an itchy, swollen condition that mimics pink-eye.

So, the next time you see one of these tough, pollinator-magnet, traditional medicine cabinets rolled into one in the desert, keep in mind they are best admired from a respectful distance, unless you are really jonesing for a case of desert pink-eye.

TODAY’S THEME NIGHTS & RESTAURANT SPECIALS 🍷

First day of summer, and last day of summer wine. So, if you’ve yet to get your sipper, here’s where you can get it for ½ off tonight.
