TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Monday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Well, did everyone have an Olympic-ful weekend? I haven’t watched much so far, but there’s certainly plenty to watch. Every Olympics is the same for me. I’m only interested in a handful of events, but there’s just sooo much, it’s impossible to keep up.
Also, how about that shutdown on the Interstate between Barstow and Baker? Whew, what a mess. I do hope none of you got caught up in the chaos. (And I thought the lane closures on I-15 around The Strip were gonna be miserable this weekend.)
And a special thanks to our newest members! If you want to join, you’ve got a few days left to become a Summerlin Insider and put your name in the running for our July giveaway - a Makers & Finders gift card. 🚨 We draw on July 31st!

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS (U.S. v THE WORLD) 🐓
In today’s Happy Hours & Eats, it’s U.S. versus the world. Okay, not really. But it is a global food day versus a national food day, which is like the culinary equivalent… I think.
First up, on the global stage, it's World Lasagna Day, a day for celebrating the hearty flavor-filled layers of a fine lasagna. It's also a day on which I have to admit to something that may scar many of you. I grew up eating lasagna made with cottage cheese instead of ricotta, and I still prefer it (and make it) that way. But based on the reactions of people who have tried my mama's homemade lasagna, they prefer it that way too 😉
Unfortunately, lasagna isn’t quite a Happy Hour staple. But there is one place where you can get Lasagna Bites (with ricotta) at Happy Hour tonight, and that’s Al Solito Posto.
|
Next up, on the national food stage, it's National Chicken Wing Day, a foodstuff quite a bit easier to come by on a Happy Hour menu. So, if you’re ready to take flight into a plate of wings, here are some places you can hook them up in some form or other today -
Blue Ribbon Sushi (Red Rock Resort) - Blue Ribbon Wings
Hawthorn Grill (JW Marriott Resort) - Whiskey Glazed Wings
Lazy Dog (Downtown Summerlin) - Buffalo Wings
Lemongrass & Lime (Summerlin West) - Lemon Pepper Chicken Wings
The Martini (Boca Park Area) - Chicken Wings
Wahoo’s (Boca Park) - Wings

Did You Know? 🧐
The technique that high jumpers use to pass over the bar in the high jump is called the “Fosbury Flop,” and there's some cool physics behind its success.
In the 1960s, high jumpers were still using techniques that looked like they were trying to elegantly leap over an invisible fence. Then, along came Dick Fosbury, a teenager with an idea. Fosbury thought, instead of going over the bar upright or sideways, why not throw himself backward, head-first, and land on his back? Sound crazy? The media in Fosbury’s local area thought so too. Newspapers dubbed his technique the “Fosbury Flop.” Some even went so far as to call him the “world’s laziest high jumper.” But Fosbury kept up with his technique, gained height on his competitors, and started a revolution in high jumping.
The breakthrough for Dick Fosbury, and his Flop, came at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Fosbury used his unconventional method to clinch the gold medal and set an Olympic record. The crowd went wild, the judges’ jaws dropped, and, suddenly, everyone wanted to flop like Fosbury.
So, just why does the Fosbury Flop work so well? Well, it’s all about the physics. When you jump backward at a curve, your center of gravity - essentially, the balance point of your body - stays lower than the bar even as you pass above it. That’s because so much of your body remains dangling below. This nifty trick allows you to use less energy while jumping higher. Essentially, the Fosbury Flop allow jumpers to cheat gravity in style.
So, this Olympics as you watch high jumper after high jumper soar over the bar backward, remember the technique is called a flop because so many naysayers expected it to fail.
AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE) 🌮
Here are some things Around the Valley (and the Olympics!) we think might be of interest -
How About That Opening Ceremony? 🇫🇷
Well, that Olympics opener was DIFFERENT. And I mean that in the best sort of way. The freerunner over Paris, the use of landmarks, the ample amount of amour. I freaking loved it. Where else are you going to both break into Les Miz and get an appearance, head-in-hand, by Marie Antoinette? I love Paris and I love weird stuff, so this worked for me. My fave parts were the “dance” on the Notre Dame scaffolding and the dancers in the fountain.
Is Del Taco Del-icious? 🌮
Do you fancy yourself a fast food connoisseur? If so, you might have something to say about USA Today's list of the Best Fast Food Restaurants in the U.S. The list, voted on by readers, includes many Vegas chains, including two western staples - In-and-Out Burger and Del Taco - the latter of which ranked number 1 in fast food, according to readers.
Do you agree? Is Del Taco the best quick food stop around?
