🍸 Juneteenth, Summerlin Sounds & National Martini Day

It's a good night for live music

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Wednesday Afternoon, Neighbor!

And a happy and thoughtful Juneteenth ❤️

We’ve wrapped back around to Summerlin Sounds again, and while we’re still under a heat warning, it’s cooler this week than it has been for the last two. The forecast is for UNDER 100 degrees in the shade! So, you know, get out and enjoy yourselves! Just watch out for those national news-making mosquitoes.

Also, on Monday we asked for any reader pets who are vying for a spot in the Nevada SPCA Calendar Contest, and we’ve got two local puppers to support in the voting. So, good luck to Waylon & Wynny!

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS 🍸

It’s National Martini Day, a day I’m willing to celebrate in deliciously sweet drop form, but not so much in traditional martini form. I have tried them. I just can’t.

But, for those of you who love a good martini, either au naturale or utterly disguised under sweet syrup, here are a couple of places where you can get one with your Happy Hour today.

In other news of incredibly strong drinks, I tasted a Manhattan for the first time the other day.

Why didn’t anyone warn me?!?

FEATURED HAPPY HOURS 🍸

Did You Know? 🧐

Two out of the three* most common surnames in the United States are so common due to a significant historical event: the end of slavery.

The names are Johnson and Williams, and they are the second and third most common last names in the U.S.

During and after the Civil War, many newly freed slaves sought to establish new identities that symbolized their freedom. Choosing a surname was a vital part of this process, and Johnson and Williams were popular choices.

For many, adopting an already common and respected surname like Williams or Johnson provided a sense of dignity and a fresh start. These names were well-known and respected, which allowed newly freed individuals to integrate more smoothly into society. So, while already fairly widespread, names like Johnson and Williams grew by measures in the United States during this period of transition.

This trend of adopting common surnames, like Johnson and Williams, wasn't just practical, it was symbolic of the broader quest for equality and recognition. It was one small way of saying, “I am here, I am equal to you, and I am taking my rightful place in society.”

(*Smith is the most common surname in the U.S., for the record.)

TODAY’S THEME NIGHTS & RESTAURANT SPECIALS 🍷

Well, “Summer Wine” was no longer stuck in my head, but since I’ve decided to make it a theme for the week, it’s now right back in there. (It’s The Corrs and Bono version, not the original, in case you’re wondering.)

Anyway, I’ve done this to myself, and here are a couple of places where you can get wine on special tonight. One that’s a fairly normal wine special (Buca di Beppo) and one that’s been running an ongoing wine special where you can get a mystery bottle of wine to-go for $6 while supplies last (The Martini).
