đŸ¶ Free Pet Adoptions, Fried Pickles & Housing Crisis

It's a good night for dancing!

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Got some space in your house and some room in your heart for a lovable pet? The Animal Foundation is overrun with four-leggers and are looking for some good homes. đŸ¶ In an effort to hastily find fur-ever homes for this lot, they’re waiving adoption fees tomorrow and Saturday. So, if you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is a really good time. Hours are 11 am to 7 pm both days.

Also, if you’ve bought some illegal fireworks and are looking to defy the fuzz for your July 4th celebrations, you should know a crackdown is in effect. Fines start at $500 and go as high as $10,000, so go boom at your own peril. But also it’s fire season, so if you’re gonna go boom at your peril, please do so cautiously.

Did You Know? đŸŒč

Our idyllic notions of roses and their symbolism date back to at least 3000 BC.

While we might think of roses as the go-to flower for Valentine's Day or to stir up a little romance, their reputation as the bloom of love and beauty has been blooming for millennia.

The history of roses begins in ancient Mesopotamia, where archaeological evidence dates roses back to at least 3000 BC. But these early roses weren't just appreciated for their beauty and their fragrance, they were also prized for their medicinal properties.

Bring it around to ancient Egypt, and roses took on a spiritual quality. They’ve been found in the tombs of pharaohs, symbolizing the quest for eternal life.

Then, things went mythical. In Greek mythology, roses were said to have been created by the goddess of flowers, Chloris. According to legend, Chloris transformed the lifeless body of a nymph into a rose, giving it beauty from Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and a sweet scent from Dionysus, the god of wine. Talk about a divine makeover!

The Romans, never to be outdone by the Greeks, adopted the rose and its symbolism with equal gusto, using them to decorate banquets and public celebrations. The phrase "sub rosa," meaning "under the rose," comes from Roman times when a rose was hung above a meeting table to signify that everything spoken beneath was to be kept confidential, turning the rose into a symbol of secrecy and discretion, as well as love and beauty.

Add to that purity and power during the Middle Ages when the rose became a symbol of the Virgin Mary in Christian symbolism, representing purity and divine love, and also a symbol of strength during the Wars of the Roses in England, where the white rose symbolized the House of York and the red rose the House of Lancaster.

So, while many of our symbolic beliefs are more modern, our passion for roses (and the idea that roses represent passion) is more than 5,000 years old.

But, as they say, if the petals get you smooches, don’t fix it.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🏡

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

It’s an Ashley Megastore đŸ›‹ïž

Wondering what that big ole building going up off of 215 right next to the IKEA is going to be? It’s an Ashley HomeStore megastore. The store was originally supposed to be open by late-2022, but is now expected to open by early-2025.

A little weird that it’s going up literally right next to the IKEA, maybe? Or maybe it isn’t. Maybe Southwest Vegas is looking to start its own Furniture Row. At any rate, it could be convenient - practically one-stop furniture shopping and hauling.

Maybe the RC Willey should move down there and complete the trifecta.

Las Vegas Housing Crisis 🏠

Of course, hauling your furniture in one trip won’t be of much use if you can’t find a place to put it. And for many Vegas families that’s becoming more and more difficult. According to experts, Vegas is in the midst of a full-blown housing crisis, and right here in Summerlin people are housing unstable due to rising rental costs.

So, what can we do about it? Unfortunately, for most of us, not much. It’s going to take some serious official action to stop the rise and put things back on an affordable level.

But, if you own your home or have a good landlord, you might want to toast to your house tonight.
