TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Wednesday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Happy Hump Day đŸȘ

So, what did everyone get into for Just Because Day? Personally, I got into some Handel’s lemon bar ice cream after lunch. And I do recommend. (Though, it’s an outgoing seasonal flavor, so it probably won’t be there for long. But, for the record, the incoming seasonal bananas foster is already there, and is also delicious.)

Also, you have a few days left to become a member and put yourself in the running for a Hussong’s gift card. We draw on August 31st!

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🍁

We’re nearing the end of summer, and those fall menus are starting to roll in. If you’d like a preview of True Food Kitchen’s seasonal menu offerings, you can get one on September 17. The restaurant is serving up a sneak-peek, 3-course prix-fixe (appetizer, entree and dessert). And since it comes complete with a margarita flight for $39/person, it feels like a pretty good deal. Just know, there’s only one seating for the prix-fixe, at 6:30 pm, and you have to pay in advance to secure your spot.

  • True Food Kitchen

  • Downtown Summerlin

  • 3-Course Fall Tasting Prix-Fixe with Margarita Pairing $39

  • September 17 - 6:30 pm

Only need one margarita, and need it today? Check out our list of Wednesday Happy Hours.

Did You Know? 🧐

George Washington wasn't the first president in the United States. He was just the first president of the United States.

Don’t worry, it’s not as confusing as it sounds 🙃

So, here’s the deets:

Before the Constitution was ratified in 1788, the United States was governed by the Articles of Confederation, which were in effect from 1781 to 1789. Throughout this period, the country had a president - President of the Continental Congress. It sounds fancy, but much like being student body president at most schools, the position was largely a ceremonial one - kind of a cross between a meeting chairperson and a paper-pusher. It was far from the executive powerhouse the presidency became under the Constitution.

Still, the eight men who held the position were technically president of the country, starting with the first - John Hanson - who served from 1781 to 1782.

So, while George Washington may get the credit for being first sitting president of the United States, there were several butts before his warming up the seat. And while these guys may not have had the power the president wielded after the ratification of the Constitution, they did help guide the nation in its earliest days, even if their version of the presidency was more "meeting planner" than "commander-in-chief."

AROUND THE VALLEY 📍

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

DMV-ing Online đŸ’»

Hate standing around at the DMV? Well, the DMV’s new online options won’t change that entirely, but they will simplify the process. The DMV’s new Rapid Registration system supports document uploads, which means you can make sure you have all your paperwork in order before you get to the DMV office. While you’ll still have to pop in to pay and pick up your plates, you’ll no longer have to worry about forgetting an essential document and having to make a return visit.

Hey! Companies! Leave Those Houses Alone!* đŸ˜ïž

In a bit of a continuation of yesterday’s not-so-happy eviction rate news, Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that investors are still buying up Las Vegas housing. That might be why Las Vegas rental prices continue to rise, even as other cities are finally getting some relief from skyrocketing housing costs. So, if you’re a renter with a real-person landlord who hasn’t substantially increased your rent over the last few years (like me!), you’ve got something to be thankful for.
