Lots of blood drives going on this week!
TODAY’S WIND DOWN PRESENTED BY
Happy Tuesday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Blood drives, blood drives everywhere, but not a drop to drink. We hope… Unless you’re a vampire. 🧛 In that case, enjoy I guess.
Seriously, though, there are a few blood drives on the immediate horizon at area libraries, including one today until 4 pm at Spring Valley Library. The American Red Cross is presumably gearing up for the holiday season, and it is the season of giving. So, you know, if you’ve got quality blood that needs a new home, add it to your gifting list.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🥞
Well, we finally made it to Snooze last week, and that was some tasty brekky. It was also a pretty good deal. They have “Weekday Eats” that start at $10, and, more importantly, it’s all-day Happy Hour on weekdays, which means you can top your brekky off with a mimosa or Bloody Mary for five smackers. Or a mocktail for $3.
Our savory selection - the Denver omelet - was a bit greasy, but in that exactly-right-for-a-diner sort of way, and the blueberry pancakes were divine. Plus, the service was choice.
Overall, we recommend. Though, if cholesterol’s an issue, you might want to skip those savories or make this one an occasional indulgence. Also, this is a daytime restaurant, which means that “All Day” Happy Hour ends when they close. That’s 2:30 pm on weekdays!

Did You Know? 🙏
The same woman who wrote “Mary Had a Little Lamb” is responsible for Thanksgiving.
Who knew nursery rhymes and pumpkin pie could have such a powerful connection?
Sarah Josepha Hale might have been best-known as a poet with a knack for lamb-themed jingles, but she was also a relentless advocate for a national day of gratitude. For 17 years - yes, 17 YEARS - she wrote letters to anyone in power who might listen, lobbying for Thanksgiving to become a national holiday. Presidents came and went (four of them, to be exact), and Hale kept at it, writing essays and editorials and firing off letters like the 19th-century queen of spamming.
Finally, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln - maybe impressed by her persistence, or maybe just needing to spread a bit of goodwill during the Civil War - made it official. On October 3, 1863, he issued a proclamation declaring Thanksgiving a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. (Yup, it was the LAST Thursday then.) All because Hale refused to take "no" for an answer. (Take note, aspiring influencers.)
But while Hale may have hounded a president into finally relenting, Thanksgiving wasn't exactly a new concept. People had been celebrating it on and off for centuries, dating back to that famous Pilgrim feast in 1621. By Hale's time, many states already observed Thanksgiving, but there was no standardized date, and it wasn't nationally recognized. Hale believed a unified day of thanks could bring the country together. (Not exactly a permanent cure, but it was a nice enough thought.)
And Hale wasn’t just responsible for Thanksgiving as a national holiday. She also shaped many of the holiday's traditions. Through her writings, she championed the idea of roast turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, so you can thank Sarah for the Thanksgiving staples on your table too.
So, this Thanksgiving as you’re tucking into your Thanksgiving feast, remember to raise a glass to Sarah Josepha Hale. Without her tireless resolve, we might have been left with just a lamb and no turkey.

Flying This Weekend? ✈️
You might regret it. Harry Reid International Airport has issued some travel tips for the expected surge in crowds at the airport for the F1 Grand Prix. Those tips include leaving for the airport four hours before your flight, and dropping any checked luggage with the airline three hours before your flight. That’s so you can be in line for security two hours before your flight and at your gate an hour before your flight.
Sounds… pleasant.
So, yeah, if you’re just flying to LA or Phoenix for the weekend, you might wanna turn it into a road trip instead.
Cars in the Arts
Love puttin’ your eyeballs on sexy cars? Do it for a good cause tomorrow in the Arts District. Car Scene Network is holding the Cars in the Arts Food Drive to benefit Three Square Las Vegas. The event features food trucks, a live DJ, and, of course, many top-notch rides, and is free for spectators. But it’s a food drive, so you know… bring some non-perishables.
