Happy Wednesday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Or should I say that in code? It is, after all, Navajo Code Talkers Day, which honors a super cool slice of American history and the heroic soldiers who helped the Allies win World War II.

Also, did you feel that earthquake last night? 🫨 It was so quick, it felt more like a big gust of wind wanted to lift the house off its foundation, but was also pretty identifiable as an earthquake, which has since been confirmed.

Now, in a complete turn to nonsense, does anyone else wonder why retailers feel the need to send sales emails every day? Like, if I haven’t needed a new turtleneck for the past four days, Kohls, I probably don’t need one today. I realize this is pretty rich coming from someone who sends daily emails, but what can I say? Also, I just remembered I need a new turtleneck.

Did You Know? 🧐

Though most people are familiar with the Navajo Code Talkers and their crucial role in World War II, Navajo was not the first Native American language used in the world wars. It was Choctaw, used in World War I.

In the final year of World War I, U.S. forces and their allies were facing a significant problem: their communications were being intercepted by the enemy. Since having every move known in advance is no way to win a war, the U.S. military needed a solution, and they found one in the Choctaw language. The Choctaw Code Talkers, as the Choctaw soldiers became known, were able to send and receive messages that the Germans couldn't decipher, even if they did get a hold of them. The end result? Victory for the Allied Forces.

But the success of the Choctaw Code Talkers didn't go unnoticed. After the war, spies were sent to the U.S. to learn Native American languages, including Choctaw, in case these languages were used in future conflicts. So, now the U.S. military had a new problem: how could they continue to use Native American languages as a secure method of communication if the enemy was trying to learn them? Well, here was one idea - just choose a nearly unlearnable language - Navajo.

The Navajo language was (and still is) incredibly complex, with a structure and tonal nuances that made it difficult for non-speakers to learn. Even more essentially, perhaps, the language had never been written down, which meant there was no dictionary or written record that could be used by the enemy to crack the code. This is how the Navajo Code Talkers played such a pivotal role in the Pacific Theater, transmitting vital information that the Japanese were never able to decipher, and helping the Allies win World War II.

But, while the Navajo Code Talkers might steal the spotlight (and should be rightfully honored today), it was the Choctaw who first turned their native tongue into an uncrackable weapon of war. Both languages, wielded by brave soldiers on the battlefield, didn't just protect secrets -they helped shape the outcomes of two world wars, leaving an indelible stamp on world history.

Feeling for the Residents of Park Towers 🫨

Speaking of earthquakes, at least the one we had last night was legit. Imagine if your earth shook simply because someone around you was making that much noise. Well, have you seen this story about the Sphere and the residents of Park Towers? Basically, it boils down to this - the Sphere gets to make a whole bunch of racket 18 nights of the year until midnight. In their test run of this (which the Sphere spokespeople claim was a mistake that was louder than the 87 decibels approved by the board), residents of Park Towers reported rattling windows and basically being scared out of their wits. So, you know, an earthquake of sorts.

The only good news for nearby residents/tourists staying in hotels within hearing-range is that the board added a decibel limit and a limit as to how many nights per year the Sphere was allowed to exceed current noise regulations. Because, when they submitted their request, the Sphere’s parent company wanted unlimited noise on unlimited nights. So, it could be a whole lot worse.
