TODAYāS WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Wednesday Afternoon, Neighbor!
I mean, sort of. I got woken up by leaf blowers bright and early today. And, by bright and early, I mean like 7:45, which I realize isnāt early for many of you, but stillā¦ leaf blowers arenāt my favorite wake up call. (When it comes to leaf blowers, I believe Cate Blanchett said it best.) The point is, apologies if Iām out of sorts today. š„“ I promise Iām trying to get my sorts sorted as quickly as possible.
Also, far more important than my leaf blower woes are your puppers. Tomorrow morning, at 7 am (almost for real bright and early), registration opens for Dog Daze of Summer, which takes place not too far Beyond Summerlin at Desert Breeze Aquatic Facility. Dog Daze of Summer is a pup-only swim that takes place on September 7th, and, while you technically register until September 5th, the event tends to fill up pretty fast. š¶ So, if your doggo loves a good swim, you might want to check out the details and set your alarms now (and remember to send us pics of your dog at the swim).

Apparently, I like bourbon.
Here a short story - When we lived in Henderson several years ago, we went to the Lucilleās Smokehouse at Green Valley Ranch. We were looking for some good barbecue, weād read they had good barbecue, and we were terribly disappointed. We hadnāt been back since.
Well, yesterday, we decided to brave the deep-fried waters again. We tried the Lucilleās (Red Rock Resort) Happy Hour, and I donāt know what else to say, Friends, it was great. I mean, nothing we consumed was even remotely in the vicinity of healthy, but everything tasted really good. That said, I felt compelled to get a whiskey drink since whiskeyās sort of their thing, and I did that - a Hot Honey sour - and it was unreal. Then, I went a little lighter and tried the Watermelon Margarita, and, while it tasted really fresh (with bits of watermelon even), it just wasnāt as good. Same deal with the Scarlett vs the Texas Goes Tiki. The Scarlett was justā¦ better. So, I guess what Iām saying is, āYes on Lucilleās not-at-all-good-for-you-but-very-tasty Happy Hour, and, if youāre going to go, opt for a whiskey drink.ā
Also, earlier this year, I went for the bourbon sour at Bonefish Grillās Social Hour, and also loved it. So, maybe I just really like bourbon? Or do I really like sour? š¤·š»āāļø

Did You Know? š„
The Olympic flame was first introduced in Amsterdam in 1928, but the torch relay didnāt come until eight years later in 1936 in Berlin.
Let's go back and follow the Olympic flame on its epic journey. It all started back in 1928 when Amsterdam lit the first Olympic flame for a surprisingly mundane reason - to signal to people in the area where exactly in the city the games were taking place. So, it wasnāt so much a matter of fanfare, it was more a matter of direction, like a pinpoint on a map.
Then, the main organizer of the 1936 Olympic Summer Games in Berlin, Carl Diem, had an idea that was simple yet grand - letās honor the Olympicsā ancient roots by lighting a flame in Olympia, Greece (the very birthplace of the Olympics), and having it brought to Berlin by a relay of torchbearers. It was an idea with deep historical roots. In the ancient Greek games, a sacred fire was kept burning throughout the events on the altar of the sanctuary of Hestia.
So, thatās just what the German organizers did. They planned a sweeping journey of the flame from Olympia to Berlin with torchbearers carrying the flame the nearly 2,000 miles between Olympia and Berlin, creating a new tradition that continues to this day.
In its time, with each unique spin by the Olympicsā host cities, the torch has taken some truly unusual journeys. It has traveled by boat, by plane, and even by spacecraft and underwater. In 2000, the Olympic Torch took a splash to the Great Barrier Reef, and in 2013, it went on a mission to the International Space Station.
But, while the torch has been on its fair share of extraordinary journeys, the torch relay is more than just fancy show of one-upmanship between countries. It's a powerful symbol of peace, unity, and the enduring human spirit. Each relay, communities around the world participate, with each torchbearer getting their ā15 minutes of flameā and adding their chapter (and their countryās) to the Olympic story.
AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE)š„
Here are some things Around the Valley (and the Olympics!) we think might be of interest -
The U.S. Figure Skating Team Gets Gold š
Back in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the U.S. Figure Skating Team came in second place. But with a major caveat. One of the members of the Russian Figure Skating Team, who came in first, tested positive for a banned substance. (It was a heart medication, for the record.) Not sure what to do about that in a team sport, the Olympic Committee did nothing, as in they awarded NO MEDALS for the event - the first time in history Olympians werenāt award their medals on-site.
Ever since the debacle, Team USA has been lobbying for a decision on the medaling situation, and on July 25th the Court of Arbitration for Sport finally came to one, at last awarding the US the gold and Japan the silver. Russia was awarded the bronze over Canada, who came in fourth place and whose athletes are surely a little peeved about this decision.
