Makers & Music may get cancelled for heat!

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Have you weeded your plants lately? If not, it’s National Weed Your Garden Day, which makes this a good day to do it. You know… later… after the sun’s gone down.

Earlier this spring, we trimmed some (fairly high) dead branches from our tree with nothing but a pair of pruning shears and a step stool. I would NOT recommend this. But, yeah, if you haven’t tended to your garden in a while, you might want to get on that, and I mean that both literally and metaphorically.

In today’s Summerlin City Wind Down:

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS 🍸

Will there be a Makers & Music at Tivoli Village tonight? Last week’s was cancelled due to the heat, so I’m leaning toward probably not. But we’re going to take you up to that area anyway, and talk Happy Hours where you can get a nice, cool cocktail that’ll help ease the heat for a truly reasonable price.

When we’re talking cool cocktails at a reasonable price, we have to start with Echo & Rig, where they serve up The $3 Cocktail, a super light concoction that’s as easy on alcohol as you’d expect from a $3 cocktail, but absolutely tasty and refreshing.

Just down the road at El Dorado Cantina, most of their drinks are ½ off at Happy Hour, and that includes a bevy of light cocktails and flavored margaritas. They’re not quite $3, but the Happy Hour price brings them down to around $8-9.

Next, at Al Solito Posto, they serve up $10 spritzes at Happy Hour or $36 carafes. Or, if you’re feeling something cold and sugary that’s not a cocktail, you can score a $5 cider, hereby known as the drink that got us through a very hot summer in Europe a couple of years ago.

Did You Know? 🧐

The oldest creosote bush is nearly 12,000 years old.

Well, closer to 11,700 years old to be exact.

Nestled on protected land in California's Mojave Desert, this ancient wonder’s age makes it not only the oldest creosote bush in the world, but one of the oldest living organisms on Earth. From woolly mammoths to the invention of the wheel to the rise of artificial intelligence, the bush has born witness to it all.

Affectionately named "King Clone," this creosote, which is actually a ring of separate bushes, has earned its regal title by mastering the art of survival in one of the harshest environments on the planet. It does this through a nifty process known as “clonal growth.” Instead of relying solely on seeds, the King Clone creosote sends out new shoots from its root system, creating genetically identical clones. This means that while individual stems may die off, the plant as a whole lives on, rejuvenated by continuous growth, like its own renewable energy source.

Tack on resin-coated leaves that reduce water loss and the ability to go dormant in particularly harsh conditions, and this plant isn’t just a survivor, it’s a living, photosynthesizing monument to the endurance of life on Earth.

TODAY’S THEME NIGHTS & RESTAURANT SPECIALS 🐶

Feeling charitable, and want to make your restaurant meal really count tonight? You’ve got a couple of options. First up, there are still a couple days of (official) Restaurant Week left, and a couple of the places where you can get a refreshing drink at Happy Hour tonight are also places where you can get a $50 prix-fixe dinner, one with choices and one without.

Or, if you want to support the Southern Nevada Animal Rescue League in a delightfully tasty way, you can dine at Lazy Dog in Downtown Summerlin today. Just don’t forget to bring the flyer to make sure the Rescue League gets their portion!

Got a vacation coming up? Don’t forget travel insurance! It’s cheap and the peace of mind you need. Plus, travel is already stressful enough!
