TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Thursday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Last week, we mentioned that Clark County needs a bundle of poll workers for the upcoming elections. Well, they still do. Plenty of jobs are still available. So if you’re looking for some temporary employment, you can check out the job listings on the Clark County election jobs page.

Also, it’s More Herbs, Less Salt Day, and while I have super low blood pressure and can’t really do less salt, I’m a big promoter of more herbs. I’m especially a fan of using cinnamon and cocoa in savory dishes.

And thank you again to our members. We draw for a Hussong’s gift card on the 31st! If you’d like to support your local team, you too can become a member!

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS (Featuring Openings & Closing?) đŸ·

If you enjoy trying new foods, you’ll be happy to know a couple of new restaurants are on their way to Summerlin. One of them, Ciao Vino Ristorante, is opening Monday (September 2) in Boca Park. The other, Loaded Empanadas, is set to open September 16th, also in Boca Park

Meanwhile, in Downtown Summerlin, Public School 702 may be on its way out. A reader informed us the restaurant has been canceling parties in preparation for an impending closing.

Stay tuned

Did You Know? đŸŒ”

The reason cacti are so hardy is because many of them are Goldilocks plants. Unless conditions are just right, they'll simply go dormant.

The stuff of nightmares
.

When you walk out over a Las Vegas landscape, and see the cacti thriving (even when it’s 120 degrees for days on end), it’s because they have a unique adaptation that allows them to survive in harsh environments. Basically, when they don’t like conditions in the world around them, they take a snooze. (Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?)

When things get too cold, too hot (talking to you, Vegas), or too dry (also you, Vegas), cacti will slow down or stop growing altogether, conserving their energy until things improve. It’s a lot like how animals hibernate through winter, except cactuses are way picker about the temperatures they’ll endure.

When in dormancy, cacti significantly reduce their metabolic processes. This means they don’t need a whole lot of water
if any. They’re sleepin’, not sippin’.

So, if you’re worried about your cactus that seems not to grow, it may be doing exactly what it needs to do to survive. The important thing is to avoid overwatering, and just let it sleep. Because no one likes to be woken up early.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🏈

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Raiders Football 🏈

Want to meet your team? The Raiders narrowed their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday. They kept most of their draft picks, let go of some veterans, and really like their linebackers. You can see the full roster at the Raiders website, and if you wanna agree or disagree with what that means for the team, here’s an article about the roster you can pick apart.

Someone’s Betting on the Raiders đŸ€‘

At least one fan (or maybe just a bold gambler) has some faith in the Raiders roster this season. (Though the bet was placed in June.) A Nevada-based bettor has put down $31,000 on the Raiders to win the Super Bowl at 80-1 odds. That would be a nearly $2.5 million payout if the Raiders can take the trophy.

But, before you go digging in your pants pocket for $31,000 to bet on the Raiders, you should know the odds have already dropped to 60-1.
